Mac Mini Late 2014: Where are the two ambient temperature sensors on a late 2014 Mac Mini?

I’m monitoring the temperature of all the sensors on a Late 2014 Mac Mini (Macmini7,1) and I was wondering if anyone knows what the difference between the “Ambient" thermometer and the "Ambient 2" thermometer is? Even better does anyone know exactly where they are inside the unit?

I’ve got the Mac Mini downstairs in the basement and as we're now moving into Spring and eventually Summer, I want to keep an eye on things down there to ensure they don’t get too hot.

The actual room temperature is 15.1ºC and the Ambient is reading at 27ºC and the Ambient 2 is reading at 25ºC. Does anyone know much about the placement of those two sensors in the Late 2014 Mac Mini? I assume they are measuring air temp inside the case, and not inlet temperature. I’ve not been able to find much online about where those two sensors are inside the unit.

I’m more curious than anything else. I’m happy to use the ambient sensor temperatures as a proxy for the overall environment, but I’m curious as to where they are.

Mac Mini Model A1283: Migrate all info including old OS from old int. HDD to new SSD

I’m installing a new SSD in my Mac Mini and I want to migrate my old applications, docs and (importantly) OS 10.6.8 from the old HDD to the new SSD.

If I back up the current HDD to Time Machine, can I install the new SSD and then “restore” it from the back-up? Will it restore the old OS 10.6.8? (Which is what I want).

Mac Mini Mid 2010: Temps high and fan spins higher than usual.

So after an incident where the fan connector came loose. The cowling melted (slightly). After reconnecting the fan, everything seems fine. This mini is a server model and is dual-booting OS-X Server and normal High Sierra. On Snow Leopard server, it runs fine and not too hot. But, on High Sierra, it goes up to 90C and the fans go full speed. I made an AHT USB drive and all test pass just fine.

Is it an SMC issue? Do i need to replace the cowling, thermal paste or board? Or should I try reinstalling High Sierra?

Update

I wrote a little batch script that checks the temps every second and outputs it to terminal. On the OSX Server, everything’s chill as usual. But, on High Sierra, the mac boots, temps are around 57 degrees (ok looks fine), then they ramp up 0.1-0.2 degrees every second until it hits around 76. Stays there for a minute, fans roar. Temps go down, fans ok. But there’s not a single process using much CPU and the activity monitor pins the CPU at 90%. I will try resetting the SMC, NVRAM etc. and if that does not work, try reinstalling the High Sierra install. But will have to back everything up first.

Again, i don’t think a melted cowling should cause these kind of issues. But I could be very wrong.

Another Update

I had an emergency and wasn’t near my system. I took a screenshot about every minute. The die does seem to get HOT. Maybe thermal paste? But it also only happens starting 30s after it logs in, and then a few mins later it seems like nothing happened… Will definitely reinstall macOS High Sierra because that just isn’t right.

Mac Mini Mid 2011: Fan speed out of control

I’m unable to find a solution to fix the speed issue, even though it seems quite a common problem.

The fan is running at over 6500 RPM (more than max), and Macs Fan Control and TG Pro cannot slow it down.

Neither program reports any sensors running above normal, they are all below, and because the fan is so fast, the mac is quite cool, but loud. I have reset the SMC, and even tried to re-touch the solder joints on the fan connector, not knowing what the previous owner did.

He had a 1TB 7200 drive in it, not original Apple, and I took it out, and installed an SSD, which did not change the fan speed. The fan runs at full blast from the moment the power button is pressed.

Any ideas anyone? Any components I can check? I’ve heard something about adding a diode, but can’t find any info on it.

Mac mini Late 2018: Mac Mini Won't Boot After RAM Upgrade

Hello to iFixit community.

I got a new Mac Mini 2020 (i7, 8GB RAM, 2TB Storage) and tried to upgrade the RAM to max it out.

First I tried HyperX Impact DDR4 2666 MHz 32GB x2, but the Mac won’t boot. The light turned on but nothing on the screen. After a short while the fan suddenly went up to make a big noise very shortly, and then the noise and the light went out.

I then tried Corsair DDR4 2666 MHz 32GB x2, still the same problem.

I tried these SO-DIMMs in another laptop and turned out the SO-DIMMs themselves were all fine.

But if I put the original 4GB x2 back into the system, the Mac can boot and enter the system without any problems at all.

Does anyone have any thought on this issue?

Thank you a lot!
