eMac: How dangerous is it to work on a CRT display?

eMac: How many OSs can I run?

I have a 1GB 1.42GHz, 80GB Combo, Airport Extreme eMac running 10.5.8.

I was wondering if I could partition my hard drive to run older versions of Mac OS. For example, like bootcamp, you would be able to hold alt at start-up and the different partitions would show.

Would it be possible to have Mac OS X, Mac OS 9, Mac OS 8 and so on on separate partitions?

If it's just a case of using firewire target mode or something that would be great.

Also, does anyone know where I could download working builds of old Mac OSs?

Thanks

UPDATE

I have those 19 files now but when I click on the first one it opens a folder with old OS files in. I cannot open them as "the classic environment is no longer supported."

How do I make an image out of them, and how do I partition my hard drive?

Thanks again

eMac: Lack of detailed Guides

Hi All,

Just curious, is the lack of detailed teardown guides on eMac's due to concern over un-skilled work on CRT displays? Or just that no one has had time to make them?

I ask because i have about 50 of these things to service this summer so i can make guides. (My school district is so broke i'm replacing blown caps on MLB's and power supplies)

eMac: Airport Extreme Card not detected

I have a 800Mhz, 512MB, Mac OS 10.4.11 eMac.

It did not ship with an Airport Extreme card so I have sourced one and attempted to fit it. I put in as normal (above disc drive) and booted the system but it has not been detected. I later tried an Apple Hardware Test and it didn't even find a Card to test.

I know this card works because I put it in my iBook G4 and it worked fine. I then took the card that was in the iBook G4 and tried it in the eMac. Exact same problem. What is wrong with my eMac?

I appreciate any response, thanks!

eMac: eMac freezing up. Why? How to fix?

I got it back in 2004. it ran well for a long time, I used it mostly for iMovie and for watching movies and listening to music. basic computer stuff.

I think it started running hot, or the fan started to make a lot of noise (I was 14 so I don't remember very well) then I think it started taking longer to boot up, and sometimes would not boot up at all (I would get a solid-color screen the precursor to the startup sequence, but nothing more). when it did, it would last somewhere between 5 minutes and an hour before simply blinking off. So I put it away for 6 years.

Now it turns on but is often unresponsive, I believe the problem is related to the OS or the hard drive being too full (I seem to recall it telling me a few times that it didn't have enough space for x or y)

I started it up in single user mode, just to see what would happen.. or if it would do it. it does, but I have no idea what any of this stuff means.

maybe I should just reinstall the software (I lost the discs so I will have to either buy or download new ones)

any ideas?

eMac: Is my eMac missing a jumper?

I just bought an eMac from a local thrift shop. On the box it said it used European power and came with an Apple European two pronged chord but on the machine itself it says 120V near the serial number and on the bottom access door. When I plug it in to my American outlet and turn it on, nothing happens so I am guessing it is true that it was somehow set to use 220V.

I have been referring to a service manual online, but my computer is a different variation (it is the 1.25 GHz USB 2.0 model). Mine does look the same as the one in the ifixit guide though. I am pretty sure I need a jumper somewhere, but there is only one photo on the ifixit guide of the spot I need to look at, but the spot I need is obscured. Can anyone take a photo of the board (not the logic board, but the huge circuit board under the CRT) where the power cable connects? I’m referring to the spot in the guide where the blue and brown wires from the power socket connect to the board with a white plug. If you’re looking at the eMac from the top front, its to the left of the CRT neck.

Here is what mine looks like:

eMac: airport extreme install not working

eMac 1.25 mhz 1GBram 80GB HD

Hi iFixit Folks!

I'm trying to install a 1026 extreme card but wire for back of card can't be found in my eMac 1.25 ! There is not any wire to connect to the back of card! The card slot is correct and super drive has nothing connected to it? I'm trying to take off the front to see if it's behind it ( with the great tools I bought from you ;-) ! But I get any signal with just the card as it stands now. Any GREAT CLUE from iFixit? Hope so! Thanks.

Update

Mr. Mayer

I don't see a cable anywhere so far, but I dont know where it would be stuffed around the front, as I've got the front of the moniter loosened from the back case cover but not free of the metal covering because I was reading about the danger of CRT implosion! Which is not a chance I want to take! I'm the original owner and never put a AP card in it, though I did try to put an original AP card in only to realize it would take only the extreme card. Did apple ever leave out the antennas on these machines? I do have a torn down G3 iBook antenna that is still attached to the LCD moniter only by a soldered end and the microboard attached, could I extact that and attach it to the eMac? If so what would the process be? I don't have any diagram as to where the eMac antenna is supposed to be located from point to point of attachment. If I take the one from the G3 iBook how do I remove it without any damage to it?

I truely appreciate all you advice now and also the past! It has been very enlightening to my issues. I must say though I've bought a Windows PC because of the great price point and find it interesting but the Mac OS is my first love and will always be since 1985! I do plan on making a Mac virtual machine out of the PC. I have 5 EASY Mac's no older than 2005 & iPod Touch 4 gen. and they work well but slow compared to the current Machines. Just a FYI to you! (babble Babble, BABBLE!) Anyway if you have any easy clue on what to do, it as always will be appreciated!

Thanks a Bazillion

eMac: Front panel became very yellow. Is it possible to remove it?

I bought this eMac about 10 years ago and just so happened that I didn't have a place for it and some of my friends were asking for a spare computer for word processing and other light tasks. The last friend that had it did something (?) and the front panel became really yellow. I am aware a lot of Apple products of the time had this yellowing problem because of UV exposure, but it seems strange as the back is still completely white so is the CD tray. Could this be a job for Retr0bright? Do you have to disassemble the entire machine in order to unscrew just the front panel?
