Both the regular iPad & the mini both have magnets placed along the edge to hold a cover (i.e. [http://store.apple.com/us/product/MF061LL/A/ipad-mini-smart-cover-pink|Apple iPad mini Smart cover]).

In addition a magnet is often placed within the cover to interact with the power system to turn the iPad on & off (not all 3rd party covers have it).
