You will not damage the microphone by pushing through. It's a worth a tear down though. There is a rubber insert in the phone that you can take out carefully and clean with a needle or in my case, a mechanical pencil lead. Take note of the board and carefully using a q tip gently wipe the mic if you see some debris. Tear down would be the screws that you see, pop the bottom bezel off, and then the top. There are two cables you will need to remove to access the boot, they are near the headphone area. Pop em off carefully and you should see the little black boot which will come right out. My phone was extremely bad, cleaning the port out and completely fixed it. Good luck
