Based on what what was explained in the comments I'm guessing that you might be using too much thermal paste. Believe it or not, there is a decent sized debate about thermal paste practices in PC building, and the repair community (I.E: Spreading it out, the three dots method, letting your heatsink spread it out for you).

However, the general rule of thumb is that you should only put on enough so that it covers the surface area of the CPU, and it's not spilling over the sides.
