SMC does not recognize battery, battery charge indi. lights dont work!

I have similar problem. Im my case, if i bypass the SMC check at booting, the system runs fine on battery, although it does not recognize the battery, fan runs on full speed, and megasafe led on wall charger connector stays off the whole time. Which is normal considering SMC controls both battery management and fan speed. In this state, computer runs on battery without the charger connected.

When I run system through SMC check at booting like in normal booting. macbook wont run on just the battery, I have to connect adapter to use the macbook. The led light on megasafe wall charger connector stays green the whole time, it does not change to orange so it can charge battery. In both situations battery indicator lights on the side of macbook pro doesn't work. They don't work when I press the button, they don't work when I reboot the system like it used to. And yes, I cleaned the megasafe adapter, battery indicator wire is connected to the logic board. The white sleep led light flashes 5 times before booting up. The system won't recognize the battery, system info says:

Battery Information:

Charge Information:

Charge Remaining (mAh): 0

Fully Charged: No

Charging: No

Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 0

Health Information:

Cycle Count: 0

Battery Installed: No

Amperage (mA): 0

Voltage (mV): 0

- and the strange thing is battery indicator sometime has black X on it or sometime it says 0%, and when this happens, system says:

Battery Information:

Charge Information:

Charge Remaining (mAh): 0

Fully Charged: No

Charging: No

Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 0

Health Information: Normal

Cycle Count: 0

Battery Installed: Yes

Amperage (mA): 0

Voltage (mV): 0

I did reset SMC quite a few time, no result. I did reset PRAM/NVRAM few time, no result.

I need help. My macbook pro is Mid 2009, so the warranty is out of the question. I replaced batteries like three times already, haven't found solution yet!

Did your system get wet, or get dropped? Sounds like the battery control & management logic is not working. Does the battery tester show full charge when the system is off?

из

No, it never got dropped, and never got wet. I would not know how to test the battery to see if its full or not without the battery indicator on the side of macbook, which is not working! Im screwed!

I'd start by replacing the DC board if you plan to fix this your self.

Otherwise you may want to go to the Apple Store to get this serviced

I have come to the conclusion that, I either need a new logicboard or repair the one I have through reputable logic board repairer. I have elimated DC board and battery. It can't be bad DC board because computer runs solid on wall charger, with the green led lit on the charger. Plus, DC board does not manage when to charge battery or not, it's controlled by SMC on the logicboard. Plus, I seriously think its logic board because the battery indicator lights are not working even though it is connected to the logic board. It can't be the battery because I've already have tried three brand new batteries.

из

Currently where I live they don't have apple genius bar. The closest one is two and a half hours away! And I don't think they can fix this on same day! In a month or so I will be moving to a new place where it's close by so may be I will visit them then, and ask for their flat rate repair deal, I guess! Idk

из

Both the DC & main logic bds are involved. If you feel that strongly its the main logic board then going to the Apple store is the cheapest route.

из

Wouldn't you agree if it was DC board than, the macbook shouldn't turn on just on the wall charger without the battery inserted, but in my case it does. It cant be DC board because the led on wall charger stays bright green when its connected. And the reason it might be the logic board is because on top of not recognizing the battery, it doesn't even lit the battery indicator leds on the side of the macbook, even though the flex wire for the led is connected to the logic board! I might have damaged something on the log board when i installed the new battery.

из

Since when you bypass the SMC check at booting, the system runs fine on battery, although it does not recognize the battery, the problem can't be the DC in board. You have replaced the battery, 3x, so it is not the controller chip in the battery. The problem is on the logic board. Not many people know you can bypass the SMC check at boot, much less how to do it, thumbs up for your troubleshooting.

I had the same issue and actually found that dmit2k's comment got me up and running again. I first took it to the Apple store and they said it was a goner, needed new logic board and wouldn't be covered by a flat rate repair because of the liquid damage. I went home, found dmit2k's comment, disconnected the LED indicator light module, and the machine has worked fine since though it doesn't always go to sleep if I close it.

Thank you! I just unhooked the module and sure enough, it is charging and the best part, doesn't shut off every time I have to move to a different outlet!!

I just wanted to chime in to say I was also having the same problems - battery not detected, frequent fans coming on/system process taking up 95% of CPU, general strange booting behaviour - and unhooking the battery indicator from the mainboard fixed the problem straight away. Thank you!

Hi there Alex,

I had the same issue and actually did what you recommended and it looks like its charging now but once i plug the battery indicator i turns green again. So my question here is did you leave it unplugged?

Let me know

из

where is the location to the LED indicator light module

из

It's on the left side (MagSafe side) near the front edge.

из

OMG. This actually worked! I had replaced my logic board twice, thinking the first one was defected and swapping for another one. Plus trying two other batteries. Nothing I did could get my MacBook Pro 2012 to recognize the battery. But disconnecting the cable to the battery LED indicator fixed my problem!

из

you have to replace the battery indicator. That is the issue I have now also. I went thru 2 batteries and then I unplugged it. The battery charges now. Mine was hit with some battery acid after the battery exploded awhile back.

I had similar issue, green light but battery not charging. So I took it to apple store, he tried resetting SMC, no luck, so he did a diagnostic and found that the battery was in good condition, so he took the laptop in the back room and it works now... he took the back cover off as he mentioned to us that there was something that spill in the laptop!!! but don't know what he did. No charge for approx 1 hour of troubleshooting!!!!

Hey Alex,

I just updated my macbook pro 2008, to el capitan, and everything was fine for a few days, till yesterday when exactly what you mention started happening. Although now that I read through the symtpoms you've mentioned, I do recall odd fan behaviour, that would happen on and off, but never thought much of , since everything else was working fine.

Have any of the above mentioned solutions worked for you?

Because I too am out of warranty, with the same led flash 5 times, battery not charging, sleep indicator blinks few times on startup.

Any help would be fantastic, because I am about to attempt one or more of these fixes mentioned here.

Fingers crossed.

Thanks in advance

Nigel R
