I noticed you never got an answer to this. Are you still having this problem?

Hi Alicia

bushing is a bit too pessimistic, I think.

I managed to drop my iPod Classic into salt-water. It also went black, and I did some of the don't's in the immediate panic.

However, after letting it dry there was some reaction (even though still malfunctioning).

I ended up changing the battery (which might not have been necessary) and cleaning the logic board with some poissinoius chemical using a soft brush. And after having targetet the battery connector and the part of the logicboard around it several times, my iPod is back in order.

So I suggest taking it apart and cleaning it with a suitable product (the iPod ought to be dry by now) to remove corrosion. That might result in some sign of life and possibily a diagnosis with a better prognosis.

Worth a try--if it doesn't work you haven't lost anything but time. Good luck. +

If you like taking things apart, you'll have fun in any case :)

The short answer is: You probably can't fix it. :)

If you spill plain water on it and then turn it off immediately, you might be able to get away with taking it apart and letting it dry before turning it on again ... but if you search this site, you'll find a bunch of people that had no luck with that. You probably killed the main logic board or the display -- the two most expensive parts of the thing -- and it's difficult to take these things apart and put them back together without scratching everything up (even with experience!).

If I were you, I'd buy a used one on eBay and maybe try to sell yours for parts -- if you want something free and easy to try, plug it in to iTunes and see if it will charge and get recognized by iTunes. If not, the logic board is dead. Even if it's recognized by iTunes (but your screen stays black), there's no guarantee that replacing the screen will fix it. Sorry!
