Boots in safe mode but hangs at blue screen otherwise

MacBook Pro 15" Core Duo Model A1150 2GHz

My MacBook Pro started displaying strange colored bars all over the screen and then it hung. A hard power down and restart worked once, but the next time it did it, it got stuck with a blue screen. Now, it always gets stuck there. I can boot it in Safe Mode and it will boot all the way and display graphics just fine. The external DVI connector also works in Safe Mode. I can get into single user mode without any problems. What could be causing it to hang at the blue screen during a normal boot?

Thanks, Mayer. Actually, I had already done that, it didn't make a difference. Furthermore, after getting it to boot in single user mode, I ran fsck -fy and it did some repairs. I was suspicious that the disk might be going bad, so I installed a new hard disk and reinstalled OS X. No difference, i.e., it still hangs at the blue screen unless I use Safe Mode. What should I check next?

Booting from the install disk and holding D just brings me to the blue screen, it didn't appear to do anything. I powered down the MBP, inserted the DVD, then pressed the pwer switch and held down the Option key. When it showed the choice of hard drive or DVD drive, I selected the DVD drive. I held the D key down from the moment I clicked on that until a minute or so after the pinwheel started. My install disk is the Mac OS X Leopard install disk from a box set. Are those diagnostics on that disk?

So, today a Mac shop told me over the phone that based on the symptoms and various things I'd tried, it was the logic board ($600 repair). At least that was more info than the Apple Genius Bar, which told me my MBP was so old that Apple no longer supports it. If anyone has any other ideas of possible causes and cheaper fixes, they would be much appreciated!

Sounds like a corrupted system folder. Start up from you system installation disk. Insert the disk and hold down the "C" key till the Apple appears. Go to the second screen pull down menu. Go to Utilities > Disk Utilities, Select your drive in the left hand column and run disk repair on the drive till it runs clear. Now repair the permissions. Reboot from the hard drive, it should now work for you.

Stange. Try running a diagnostic on it. Boot from your system installation disk and hold down the "D" key. Let us know your results. Thanks

I am having a problem very similar to the one described here, with my Mac Book Pro 15" Core Duo from 2006 (dotted purple lines when starts, then stuck on blue screen; still can safe boot, but disk utilities hasn't helped).

Inserting the install DVD helped once, but the problem quickly came back, and seems now to be permanent.

I would like to know if you were finally able to solve this problem, and

how, because the solutions I have tried haven't worked.

I believe it was a bad logic board (motherboard) and I was not able to find a cheap way to fix it, so I sold the machine for parts. The battery was also not good, but the screen, keyboard, etc were all working well, so it was worth the effort to sell it for parts.

Thanks for your answer!

It's the graphics chip (GPU) it goes bad and you can only boot in safe mode, there are some tricks you can try on YouTube, also it's not a hard fix for any computer repair shop, buy a new nividia gpu for your MacBook Pro model on eBay and have a shop do it for you, I'm guessing under 100 to fix.
