The problem I have with my camera is when I try to turn it on, the zoom lens won't come out, It makes a crackling sound and then the camera turns off. Some how the zoom lens is stuck or something broken. The model of camera is a Power Shot A540

Roger, sounds like the gears in your optical unit are either binding because of dirt, dust, or they are misaligned. To work on the lens unit itself is really tedious and I would probably change the complete lens unit, due to the fact that it is difficult to obtain the small gears etc. The lens is available at places. to disassemble your camera and get to the lens is essentially the same as it is on the A550. I could use a step by step guide for realigning the gears. I have a canon A540 in my possession and the zoom lens is stuck in the outward position.
Any step by step instructions would be greatly appreciated.
