Grey screen with apple logo on start up

Hi I have just acquired a faulty macbook pro and have sorted the charging issues by cleaning out the charging port and magsafe adapter it is now fully charged but when i start it I hear the start up sound and the drive moving it then goes to a grey screen with the apple logo and a spinning wheel for about 20seconds then just a grey screen and nothing else.

It will start in safe mode and have been able to set it up this way but after switching off from safe mode it reverts to starting in the same grey screen fashion. any ideas on how to proceed fro here?

Working in safe mode but not in normal boot indicates corrupt files or drive problems. I would try booting from the CD/DVD and running Tools->Disk Tools->disk repair (to see if there is disk damage) and then permissions repair. If that changes nothing a clean (complete) install of the OS should be tried.

Also: take a look at the tags on the right for information/inspiration.
