Why do I still have video glitches

Just wanting to get some possible answers of why i am still getting video glitches on my iMac 17"?

I recently had it professionally reballed for the GPU and after getting it back, i get video, but with lacking drivers. I put the regular drivers ("kexts") back and repair all permissions, i still get the horizontal black lines when it tries to get to the login window. This happens with the main machine and using an external monitor hooked up via mini DVI. Could it be a bad reball, or is there something else i am not seeing?

You talk about lacking drivers, what OS are you using also did you alter the GPU to something else (PCI Express)?

I took out a few kexts in order to have somewhat of a working iMac. I put those kexts into a different folder called *Extensions Disabled* and rebooted the mac. So I have video but no 3D acceleration.

As for altering the GPU, no, it's still a PCI-e soldered onboard ATI x1600.

And the OS is 10.7.5

More info can be found ''here''. This explains all that i had done before. And nothing has really changed.

In the back of my mind I remember there was an issue with video drivers with Lion. As we never had any issues (we have newer systems) I didn't save the info. Maybe someone else remembers or can direct you to the details. I think the issue was resolved in Mountain Lion but I can't say for sure.

I guess my first question here is have you spoken with Apple directly or brought your system into an Apple Store to at least see what they say?

Have you tried running Apple Hardware Test (AHT) if so what did it tell you?

What gets me is the over heating problem you state in your link'ed details, and the black horizontal lines. Both imply a problem within the GPU its self. I don't think the re-mounting (re-balling) would fix this (unless you swapped out the GPU chip).

I'm not sure if your removal of the drivers just kicked the GPU into it's most basic mode to bypass the damaged services in the GPU or bad driver kexts in the OS, or it could be both!

Hmm, good question about the 10.8 drivers. As for speaking to Apple, both Westworld and Apple in WEM (Edmonton AB) both told me that it's not warranted and they would not look at it.

If it is the actual physical chip and not the soldering, then i might have to hunt down a new mobo off of ebay or something like that. I never knew that these machines could be so problematic.

Did you try AHT yet? Thats the P1 I would do now. So Apple has EoL this system so they won't repair it (wasn't expecting it was covered under warranty). Yes, you may need a new logic board. I won't say these systems where any more problematic than any other Mac or other MS box. You know what they say the grass is always greener on the other side of the street ;-}

Unfortunately I don't have the AHT for this mac. I have them for the Macbook Pro 3,1 when i got it, so i don't think they would work on a iMac 5,1.

Apple has issued diagnostics of some sort for every model. Do you have the original system CD/DVD disks that came with the system? it is located on it.

из

Nope, no original discs. If i had them then i would run the diagnostics. if someone could point me in the direction of some discs i might be able to.
