Game wont go beyond title screen

Hello recently i received a super nintendo from my friend . I have since bought a game but when ever i get to the title screen and the press any button phrase comes up it will not go any further. When ever i press any button on the controller the screen just goes blank. I have tested the game on another friends super nintendo and it works fine. If there is any way you can help me that would be appreciated i would just hate to throw away such a great system.
