AC power adapter for MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air. Uses a self-aligning magnetic connector that disconnects safely when tugged. First-generation (2006-2012) MagSafe chargers have a slightly thicker, L-shaped connector. Available in 45 W, 60 W, and 85 W versions.

Can I make MagSafe2 to MagSafe1 converter?

i know theres a $10 product that MagSafe1 to 2 converter, but now i need the other way converter.

(because all my work friends uses new MS2 gear, but i use older MS1 MBP.)

so anyway, i heard MS1's output voltage is ~16.4v(maybe max 18v?), but MS2 is ~20v.

i tried uses not-their-own power adapter of other things, 10~15% of over voltage is not a problem so far. but this time is over 20% difference. i'm not sure about working well this time too.

assume i can make magnet 5 pin connector thingy, could i use 20v pin to pin? should i use a regulator like 7818? or couple of diodes?

Can't you just buy a magsafe 1 cable and solder it to the magsafe 2 brick?

Yes. it works either. but one of the MacBook's benefits are(were) every macbook uses same AC adapter so you can charge anywhere without bring that large brick everywhere. As you know, this benefits are killed by own maker anyway. That's why i want to make a small converter. bricks are here and there but simply it doesn't fits all.

Did you make any progress here? I'm interested in such a thing, too, as at my workplace and at home, I have MS1 and MS2 mixed up. A vice versa Converter would save my lots of struggle.

I used the grinding method to convert a Magsafe 2 to Magsafe1,

Works normally!

Didn’t have a diamond dremel bit, I just used the file on a leathermen multitool. It’s not a tight fit and the plugs a little loose in the socket, but it works fine on my mid-2012 pre retina… The magnet works and the adapter stays on

System report says the A.C supply’s all good.

Perhaps there are issues with older 2011/2010? but on a 2012 MBpro 15” no problems at all!

I've bought the wrong grey market replacement charger and need backwards compatibility, i.e. MagSafe 2 charger to MagSafe 1 MacAir

Yes, but, it seems to me, Apple's MagSafe 2 Power Adapters are more discriminating (than Apple's MagSafe "1" Power Adapters) of when to switch-on their output. Aftermarket and counterfeit power supplies which are "always on" (always supplying "running" output potential, rather than a very low potential (to prevent sparking) during no-load state) will work. MagSafe 2 uses same ID data structure as MagSafe 1, so older MacBooks can recognise and accept MagSafe 2 power supplies.

I made a MagSafe 2 to MagSafe 1 converter. It works.

Another idea is to grind a MagSafe bit, to make it match the intersection of MagSafe bit shapes 1 and 2, which I attempted: I ground a MagSafe 2 bit to turn it into a MagSafe Intersection bit.

To test, I tried to use it with a MacBookPro7,1 (13-inch, Mid 2010) and with a MacBookPro6,1 (17-inch, Mid-2010). (If I had access to other MacBooks which have MagSafe 1 inlet, then I would have liked to try it with them.) My 60W A1435 Power Adapter works with both MacBookPro6,1 and MacBookPro7,1. My 85W A1424 does not work, with these two 2010 MBP test subjects.

Yes. it works either. but one of the MacBook's benefits are(were) every macbook uses same AC adapter so you can charge anywhere without bring that large brick everywhere. As you know, this benefits are killed by own maker anyway. That's why i want to make a small converter. bricks are here and there but simply it doesn't fits all. — Anonymous
