Can't hear caller over ear speaker after screen replacement

Hi iFixit,

I did a screen replacement on an iPhone 5. Screen worked great but unfortunately I couln't hear people anymore while calling. I guessed the ear speaker was broken so I ordered a new part: http://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi...

I replaced the ear speaker but still no improvements: I can only call on speaker.

Is any one familiar with this problem? Did I forgot a connector or something?

Thanks for your time!

I'm having the same issue, need an answer for this

из

I'm having the same problem. Changed the front camera along with the cables as well as the earpiece, still not working. Checked and triple Checked all cables, still no sound from calls. Is it the actual new screen that is not right? Expensive though. Please help!

из

I have this same problem. I slightly ripped my ear speaker flex cable when changing the screen. Just ordered a new flex cable and will be installing it this weekend and hoping it that it works.

из

Please Alex, could you confirm if the issue has been solved with the new piece?... I have the same issue, and i think my problem is that flex cable.

Thanks.

из

Going through same problem just that sometimes when i tap at back or front it use to start working. Need a solution tapping is not working anymore

Just fixed this same problem. I had replaced the lcd screen on an iphone 5 and the earpiece didnt work after. Heres how i fixed it. I went back over all of the ribbon connectors to make sure they are all seated well. That didnt fix it, so i took the earpiece off and cleaned the two copper contacts (attached to camera's ribbon connector that the earpiece prongs make contact with. After cleaning them with my contact cleaner pen i made sure they were properly aligned so they earpiece prongs would be touching them. Then when i went to reassemble i flipped over the 3 ribbon connectors and blew them out to make sure there was no dust or debre hendering there contacts. Reassembled and it worked fine. Not sure which of those three steps did it but you might as well do them all while your in there. Hope it works out for everyone else like it did for me.

awesome Jason thank you, phone is back to normal

What if u can't do ur self like for example there no way I'm paying more money out wen it was the persons fault who replaced the LCD in the first place

из

Make them do it. I’ll be doing the same as I have a similar issue after a screen replacement. I’ll be going back to the guy who done it. And making him repair it.

из

Thanks, Jason! Taking the earpiece off and cleaning the contacts worked for me as well! WooHoo! The iPhone 5 still lives!

Great Jason, nice to see that the cleaning worked for you. I finally managed to fix my problem as well, however the cleaning didn't help. It took me almost 4 months to understand what was wrong. I'll explain the best i can.

This was my problem and solution:

The prongs underneath the actual earpiece is only supposed to touch the copper plates, not actually that much force, if they are pushed too hard, it will not work.

So i got an original screen and found that when i disassembled it there were two very very small plastic squares with hole in them(for the screws), and is working to keep a good distance for the screws(so they are not screwed all the way into the bottom).

As i ordered my new earpiece and flex cable these small plastic squares were not included. So without them the screws were reaching the bottom and pressing the earpiece too far down and the prongs were too hard against the copper plates. So it should be firm with a loose fit(that the plastic squares solves). I guess if you lost these plastic squares you could probably improvise, but there is no way to order these parts(as to what i have found yet).

A good tip is to take an old broken screen from someone and use the plastic parts from that earpiece to yours if you lost them.

This was one tricky thing to figure out, since none else have seemed to explain a good solution. I hope i made it clear with the explaining part, if not please respond and i will explain further.

To IFIXIT staff: This is a really important part to include to the guide, perhaps you can make some adjustments?

Andreas - did you add a comment to the pertinent part of the Guide? Anyone can do that.

из

do you possibly have a picture of those plastic parts?

из

Okey, i machead3, i didn't know that at the time, so no.

Someone has apparantly fixed the guide so it includes this part. Just to make everything clear it's step 14 of this guide for the earpiece.

Picture: https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/ig...

Guide: Замена разговорного динамика iPhone 5

Without this plastic part you won't hear a thing.

In the following model of 5s the problem is solved by a permentaly attached metal bracket that's stuck.

из

The problem with picture 14 of the guide is I don't see anything that looks like that.

It should also be in an earlier step as a warning before you lose the piece.

A less-close image would be helpful to show where we are looking and then getting to the detail.

из

For the not so unlikely case this plastic squares have been lost ... how thick does the spacer need to be? (I'm thinking of replacing it a plain shim metal/plastic).

Hello. I had this happen recently. When I looked under the microscope, I found that I had broke off a resistor near the connection for the proximity/front cam/earpiece flex cable. If you're soldering skills are good, you can repair it by resoldering the resistor (if it's still there) or bridging the points on the circuit board where the resistor was.

i had the same problem but i found a way to fix mine. i took the speaker out and realized that one of the copper springs wasnt straight and it was bent to the side, and wasnt connected. so i straighten it out and made sure it was connected, i put everything back and it worked perfect.

https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/ig...

if u look at the picture the one is his hand is the earpiece speakers, and to the left of it is two copper recievers? i believe is wat its called. they need to be fully connected for the sound to work

I hope I was of help.

Had the same problem, and found that since the ribbon cable is completely seperate from the screen I just took my whole ribbon and speaker off my broken screen and put it on my new screen, took about ten minutes and as long as your speaker still works on your broken screen it's pretty much a guaranteed fix. Goodluck.

BTW I found that sometimes the speaker springs for whatever reason are not compatible with the two square gold receivers on the ribbon so replacing both the speaker and the flex cable if possible with your parts from your broken screen is your best bet.

Hi,

I recently had a drop of oil fall onto the ear speaker of my iphone 6. Subsequently the sound through the ear speaker was quiet and scratchy. Most annoyingly, my microphone stopped working with Skype (Which i use all the type to speak with me daughter who lives in another country). I thought it would be best to removed the ear speaker and give it a clean then reinstall it.

I followed the ifixit guide for this process to the letter. However, upon putting everything back togther, the ear speaker was completely silent (not even the quiet scratchy sound) and now the front camera has stopped working. I have checked all connections but to no avail. I have however identified a small rubber piece that I have no idea where it came from and so i'm not sure where it should go.... Would anyone be able to tell me where this piece should go? I think it must be somewhere around the ear speaker...

Superted that piece goes in the lcd legs , wher you screw on the pentalobe screws

из

That is actually the spacer from the post where the long screw goes into the metal surround for the earpiece speaker that helps keep the contacts on the earpiece level with the contacts on the ribbon.

I had the same problem after ordering and installing a complete ifixit front panel for an iPhone 5c. Everything worked fine except the ear speaker. (Note: actually I can't say for certain that the front camera worked as I don't recall trying to use it.)

I tried all the suggestions mentioned above with no joy. Finally decided to take off the front camera/speaker ribbon from the new ifixit front panel and swap in the same ribbon from the defective screen. After doing so, the ear speaker works as it should.

The front camera/speaker ribbon from ifixit is defective/not compatible for some reason.

I have the same problem even after replacing the speaker and the camera/proximity sensor cable. STILL doesn't work. Volume from the lower speaker still works fine, but the sound from the earpiece speaker is so low it can barely be heard with volume up, and if you turn the volume down, it can't be heard at all. I checked for missing resistors on the board and didn't see any. Any ideas from the tech world? I have done a factory reset on the phone, update to 9.0.2 on the phone, replaced the speaker, replaced the flex cable, taken the screen off a working 5C and put it on, all with identical results.

2- Check Speaker and cable contact points.

3- Change speaker.

4- Change front camera flex cable.

5- Check connector of front camera and speaker on logicboard.

Frank, i don't know how it went for Alex.

I've changed both the earpiece (speaker), also the flex cable for the sensor/front camera. "iPhone 5 Front Camera and Sensor Cable

Due to the copper plates was unforunate ripped from the flex cable(very easy to do), i've installed the new cable as well as a new speaker and still no progress.

I begin to wonder if it may be that it is some dust or fat on the surface of the connector or the copperplates or the spiral contacts, i will try to clean it. But i'm doubtful this will help.

Also there is no success when trying to pinch the phone right near the speaker when placing a call(read in some forum that it could work due to a glitch in the connection).

Too bad nobody seems to have a real solution or answer for this problem even though a lot of people are experiencing the same problem. This happend to me when i changed the screen so maybe a bad screen? Although everything else are working fine!

I had the same problem after a screen repair. I also replaced the ribbon and speaker and still no sound. It seems Apple devices do not like having things replaced. I had a similar problem on a 4S after a power ribbon replacement where the phone went into a permanent search mode. I tried all the "fixes" I could find on line and nothing worked.

It is an Apple "thing" and it doesn't happen on every phone which leads me to believe it is a software/ hardware issue.

I also think the same thing happens to the Apple repair technicians and we just don't hear about it because they have all the resources to fix the issues that come up during these repairs.

I never solved or found a fix to either problem.

Well I changed the ribbon front camera cable where is the ear speaker connected and it worked for me.

In my case if I pushed the right side of ear speaker I had sound... I think what my issue was the same what Ed Varga. He soldered the resistance, I change the piece and it work for us.

Big THANKS! :D

I only loosened the two screws holding the speaker and without those plastic parts it works.

I'm not sure how long will it work for but right now it dose work!

I believe it's akin to the old iPad 2nd generation volume button problem. If you've ever torn a power/volume flex on an iPad 2 (I know I have), you may have over tightened the screws holding the volume/switch button assemblies. It locks the outer plastic volume button in place, and you have no volume control. I tried doing 4 different iPhone 5S's, using an Apple torx spec'd screwdriver, and found that I could take the SAME phones, tighten them by hand (with and without the plastic rings), and I lost the sound every time. I used my torx by hand (with and without the rings), and found that with they worked every time. You HAVE to be careful with over tightening things in Apple devices. Before, I was just putting the bracket screws in tight as they'd fit. Have you ever opened up an iPhone 5 and seen a loose bracket screw just laying in there, possibly dismissing it as a repair gone wrong? I think it's that they have to have some play.

I have the same problem here. It's the second time I replaced my iphone 5 screen, and last time it worked perfectly fine. But this time, I broke the copper receivers, the two parts literally just became two separate parts, so I ordered a new flexible cable with camera, and put it in, and tried to loose the screw, but still no luck. Tried to align the receivers and the two golden connectors on the square piece, but no luck again.

It's so annoying that you can't hear anything from it when making calls. Anyone can help with it?

many thanks.

Sorry that I don't have a pic of the damage. There is a row of resistors on the right side of the connector on the circuit board for the front camera/ear speaker/proximity/light sensor flex cable. If you are having this issue examine that area under a microscope. If you see a missing resistor (you'll see a blank space in the row of resistors and solder connections that clearly look like something was broken off) then that is causing the problem. I'm not so great and bridging space between the solder points with solder. It can be done. Out of many attempts I've been able to do it once after one of my assistants broke one on one of our shop tester phones.

I couldn't get any sound out of the ear speaker on my iPhone 5s. The volume control icon on the screen would read "headphones" instead of "ringer."

This worked for me: I dipped a cotton ear swab in rubbing alcohol, then poked it into the headphone jack until I felt resistance. Twisted the swab clockwise a few turns, then removed the swab. Then I inserted a dry cotton ear swab into the headphone jack, again until I felt resistance, and I also twisted it clockwise a few times, then removed it. Seems to have worked so far.

My issue was static noise on top of voice from caller rather than no sound at all.

My solution was to loosen the 2 screws, that hold the earpiece( https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/ig...) in place. The screw that I believe made the most difference is the longer screw that tightens to tiny plastic spacer closest to the camera. I loosen that screw to almost half to 3/4 turn before it "pops" out. I made sure the earpiece is as level to the overall plane and not slanted (cos' by over tightening).

Put everything back together and it works perfect now!

https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/ig...

Hope this helps!

I followed one of the helpful tips I found on here and I improvised it with mine.

The cause of this issue is shown in the link Замена разговорного динамика iPhone 5

But I couldn't find mine cause it's been long I changed the screen and couldn't find the old broken screen, so I try all I could but the last trick worked,

When you follow the link I added you will find out that the cause of this is the pressure the screw at the top left of the speaker is much harder and the more harder it's gets the more the pressure it get on the speaker and that won't make it work.

So I try my last trick that works for me and by not using the top left screw and only use the down right screw to hold down the speaker and the phone sounds as clear and it was before and now perfectly working.

My best advise is to take out the top left screw and leave the down right screw to hold the speaker for not putting much pressure on it if you can't find the rubber holding that angle showed in the link description.

I wish you best of luck.
