anything in the past that could be responsible for this behavior ?

Markus. Can't think of anything. It wasn't dropped. iPod was connected to Itunes when fault occured & several codes came up on laptop screen. I didn't record them. Battery that was replaced measured 3.1 vdc & maybe it was OK. That battery was connected to a small (3/16 X 1 inch) circuit board via 2 metal tabs. The small boards output was a copper strip that had 3 holes in the end that were soldered to the logic board. The new battery had only the copper strip with the 3 holes in the end that was soldered to the logic board. The iPod just doesn't display any image. Do you think it's toast? Appreciate your comments. first of all - it could be toast. but maybe you should try a few things. disassemble it again and check the connections on the logicboard. since you can start it without the case - you should try that. check the contacts of the dock connector (inside and outside the nano) - watch out for some white/green/black stuff
measuring the battery was a good idea - die you also measure the old one ?
does any voltage came to the battery contacts if the usb cable is connected ?

Which connections to check on the logic board?
How do I start the iPod out of the case?
Don't see any white/green/black stuff.
The old battery measured 3.1v & the new 2.64v.
No change in battery voltage when USB cable connected.
Where should battery voltage be measured? I peeled back the battery plastic to measure voltage across 2 metal tabs. Can the voltage be measured at the end of the battery cable to the logic board. If so can you advise how?
Thank you.

you can measure the voltage directly at the battery cable - since the "charged" battery has 2.64v - it's to low - but that could be a usb problem!!
