Why does my MacBook take 10 min to boot up?

My MacBook worked fine in the beginning, but now it takes 10 min to boot up -- every time. It used to take 4 min to turn on, but since the latest update it now takes 10 min. I cannot shut my lid while the laptop is turned on or else it will need to a hard reboot.

Otherwise, my MacBook works just fine. I've just gotten used to living with the problem. I should be able to open and close the laptop as often as I wish, without having to resort to restarting from scratch. Any suggestions to improve the start-up time?

Restart your computer in safe mode (holding down SHIFT key). Could be corrupted fonts issue. Also try to:

- booting in Single User Mode and Running fsck -y

- repair permissions

Use TechTool and defragment and optimize the hard drive. It sounds like it is having to search all over the drive for the complete system. Also, how much free hard drive space do you have, you may need to clean some files off.

Mac OS X automatically defrags all large files.

How files are in the system?

Do I have to purchase TechTool? I have 35G of free space on a 250 G HD. Is there a Mac OS X defrag utility?

I have over 465 000 files on my HD

Check HD space as mayer suggested, you'll want 10-20% full at all times. Also open it up and check if your RAM's in alright. Finally, you can use Disk Utility to verify your drive.

Those are some preliminary steps you can try.

Hi,

You should check your start up items and remove unwanted items. Another process you can do 'Clean up'. After a long uses , lots of caches, system junks, language files etc.

I think, there are lots of fragmented data in your Mac disk, which decreases your Mac hard drive performance. Use defrag Mac tool to defrag your Mac and increase it's speed.

It is very normal for this sort of thing to happen to a MacBook. It is how the Mac essentially cleans itself out and closes any programs that have been open for excessive amounts of time. This ensures that your battery life will last longer and your programs run smoothly. If this process takes longer than 20 minutes, that is when you should be a bit concerned.
