Why can't I get past step 4 of installing Mac OS 10.5?

I have a macbook A1181. I bought a Toshiba 500GB 2.5 in internal hard drive from ifixit, and I installed it. I now want to install my OS X , but when I get to step 4 of the process, I don't see my hard drive listed, but one that says it is Toshiba 3.6TB. Also, when I go to partition it, it says that the Partition: unformatted. I don't know what to do from here, as it doesn't match anything in your directions.

Hi Dan,

The HD that was sold to me is supposed to be a Toshiba 500 GB 5400RPM 2.5" hard drive.

The Serial number last 3 digits are YA3.

You could have a few issues here:

First your MacBook only has a SATA I (1.5 Gb/s) interface so the HD you buy for your system must be able to work at this older slower SATA interface (check the specs sheet of the drive online and see if it has a jumper that you can set).

Also you may need to update your EFI firmware, Follow the steps in this Apple TN EFI & SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs.

Lastly, what version of OS-X are you trying to install? This system can only go up to 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

If you are still having problems, give us the make and model of the HD and the last three digits of your systems serial number os we can help.

If the drive is not formatted for OSX, it will not be read by your system for installation. Use disk utility to partition and format the drive to HFS+ extended(journaled) and Guid Partition table as your partition scheme and u should be good to go. If this doesn't help, try Dan's suggestions. Good Luck.

I can't get to Guid Partition, as it doesn't show up. That's the problem.

Well, I am a bit miffed about the hard drive. When I called ifixit, I had the model number and serial number that I gave the person and his recommendation was the hard drive I bought, which I thought was a 500 GB Toshiba 5400RPM 2.5 in. But in disk utilities, when I need to choose the hard drive, something shows up that says Toshiba 3.6 TB and so I am confused. I thought this was going to be a simple process, and am really not happy that you are suggesting these other things to do. I also cannot get to other things, because. I have a brand new unformatted hard drive, and everything just about is greyed out. So I can't do any updates on the computer. The system isn't installed yet. I am trying to install 10.5

Well I have some bad news if this is your drive: Toshiba 500MB its not suitable for your system. If you look at Transfer Rate to Host 3 Gb/s is SATA II not 1.5Gb/s SATA I needed data rate.

Here's a workable drive for you Seagate 500MB SSHD. Again look down the specs to SATA Transfer Rates Supported (Gb/s) Here you will see 1.5 Gb/s is supported.

Well, thank you. But I got the problem resolved. The Hard drive DID work. I phoned iFixit, and a great guy named Scott helped me, but it was a bit complicated. The problem was that the computer didn't recognize the system DVD and so we had to connect my macbook pro with the DVD to the older MacBook with a firewire cable, and transfer the installation from the DVD on the MacBook Pro to the MacBook. Doing it that way, the MacBook would let me format/partition the Hard Drive, and then I was able to restore data from my timemachine external backup hard drive. I never would have been able to do it without his help on the phone walking me through it step by step.

Thanks for sticking with this. Problem resolved.
