How critical is tape linking fan assembly and heat sink?

i just had to pull the fan in my laptop and replace it. but the strip of foamy/felty tape that connects the fan assembly to the heat sink, which all the guides say to be careful not to rip, had crystallized and broken along the seam between the two components, so preserving it was not an option. my question is, how critical is that tape and should i be looking to replace it with something? if so, what? the only source i could find for an exact replacement says it is no longer in production.

thoughts?

the tape in question is found at step 20 here: MacBook Core Duo Fan Replacement

Use any type of tape that sticks and stays stuck. It's a good idea to have that connection covered so airflow doesn't leak out, but beyond that it's not so important what you do it with. Personally I'm lazy and generally use scotch tape, although a small piece of masking tape would probably hold it better.

kapton tape would be perfect since it will stay in place even at high temperature. I also use aluminum duck tape.

I'm in the UK and used some electricians pvc tape. Very sticky and should stand a fair bit of heat.

Make sure to get the high temp version otherwise the adhesive melts making a sticky mess.
