What enclosure do I use to replace optical drive with hybrid drive?

I want to replace my optical drive but I'm getting confused about what I need because my macbook pro is a not a unibody. Its a Santa Rosa and I want to replace the optical drive with a 1 TB SSD Hybrid Sata 6 gb 2.5 inch hard drive. Do I need an enclosure? Is it different or the same as the unibody one? IS my computer to old for this?

You may not be able to do that, When this Mac was designed and built there were no 1TB laptop drives, no SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drives at all and only a few SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drives (many of todays off the shelf SATA drives are SATA II and III) Your system has a HD connector speed of type SATA I (1.5 Gb/s).

To avoid return/restock fees I would only purchase a drive with optibay caddy included from a vendor that guaranteed it will work. iFixit has a kit that will support a 1TB standard drive. I know of no one that makes an optibay kit that will put any size SSD in this age machine.

But MCE Technologies seems to sell an Optibay for Non-unibody Macbook Pros from waaaaay back in 2008 or even 2007. There website seems to think it will work, as does crucial.com. I ran crucial.com's scanner app, and it came up with my computer and a several ssd compatible devices. Are these places trying to scam people? I guess I'm still wondering about this. Anybody else know anything about this?

Not at all - however you should be in contact/discussion with the vendors, and, I would not buy from them unless they guarantee no restock/return dees if their equipment doesn't perform as advertised.

2.5" IDE/ATA Hard Drive to ATAPI Optical Bay Adapter

I've been looking at this option for my 2007 17" MBP core 2 duo macbookpro3,1 or my 15" MBP of the same age, if I ever get it running...

Only reason I didn't get one and install a 2nd drive in the opti bay, when I replaced the main hd, was the price…$99.00 seems kinda pricey, when the other 'data-doubler' mounts are about $19.

I often think about biting the bullet, and spending 100 bucks…maybe you should go first! :-)

That maybe due to the SATA speed of your drive and the optical drives SATA ports speed (via the PATA to SATA conversion of the HD carrier). You can use a slower drive in a system that has a faster port, you can't use a faster drive in a system which has a slower port unless it was designed to match the ports speed or has a means to alter its speed via a jumper.

I should also point out the Optical drive bay in your system is PATA which is very slow (80 Mb/s). The better direction here is to upgrade your primary HD with a SSHD hybrid drive. Here you get the benefit of a deep SSD cache for its speed and the deep storage of a traditional HD drive.
