The light has turned pink. Is this dangerous?
Our fluorescent light has suddenly turned pink. It is a large double light in the bathroom. I have not seen this problem on any of the sights.

Darla, no it is not dangerous. Often fluorescent lights will turn pink (caused by a loss of mercury) with black burns on the ends of the lamp as the light reaches its end of life. Replacing the light tube should fix this. Hope this helps, good luck.

This is a brand new CFL (the long-life screwy looking ones) light BULB, not a fluorescent light.
One other possible factor, my pink glowing bulb was manufactured in China by TCP (whatever that means) and the box says it does contain mercury.
in my case original tube was white with black ends. Replacement tubes were brownish and worked properly in other fixture.
CFL stands for compact fluorescent light
We have retubed a supermarket with 58 watt Philips lamps.
A good percentage have gone pink. Philips are saying they have never heard of that occurring.
This has happened in fittings that have the old wire wound ballasts as well as electronic ballasts.
Not dangerous but not good!

The voltage going through the tube will cause the tube to breakdown sooner. You maybe not using the correct tube for the fixture Guide to Fluorescent Lamp Compatibility
Loss of mercury you say. Where did the mercury go? Sounds dangerous

The mercury is still in the tube!
Think how your mirror gets fogged up after you take a hot shower. The cold surface of the glass collects the condensation from the moist air.
Basically, thats whats happing here the mercury vapor condense at the colder part of the tube. Thats what the black area is at the ends.
Mercury vapour gets obsorbed into the phosphorus paint & inner glass this means the Mercury gas pressure drops to a point where it can no longer light up leaving only the argon gas to exsite which light up pink
Probably darla. Sounds dangerous.
