Leo - Are you looking for the information on how to upgrade your CPU?

из

I don't believe any iMacs have removable CPUs. Am I mistaken?

из

It's not a matter of faith.

based on the facts.

question to people who have made such exchanges, as I

You are mistaken some iMac's have CPU's that are not soldered to the logic board... but it is a PITA to get to them and change them for a few GHz speed benefit (not noticeable for most users of iMac's)

из

All of the older desktops do. The latest iMacs Thin Series have some that don't. And, all of the laptops don't have removable CPU's or GPU's

Here's a user submitted guide on how he did it: Upgrade iMac Intel Core i3 CPU to Core i7.

Just to be clear here the GeekBench test tool does not correctly identify the CPU. It shows up as a Xenon because the instruction set is 64bit. There is no Xenon upgrade chip for this system only the i5 or i7 (most people going to the i7 chip).

Because of EFI (driver) problems you can not just stick any old Intel CPU in an Apple box. So if you have the lesser CPU of your model run you could conceivably upgrade to the fastest OEM version by either replacing the CPU from a damaged unit (if your model has a removable CPU - not all do) or replacing the entire logic board.

Either is a very advanced DIY project (not a place to begin DIY computer upgrading) requiring you to completely disassemble then reassemble the entire machine.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

I performed this replacement on my iMac11,3 2010 27" A1312, and "upgraded" to a X3470.

The results were unexpectedly POOR. In fact, the machine operated SLOWER than with the i3-550. After experiencing this, it seemed that the appropriate upgrade path was the recommended one. I bought the i7-870 chip and immediately saw the performance gain I had hoped for.

Here are my Geekbench 4 metrics for an iMac11,3 Mid-2010 27", running macOS 10.13.6, with 16Gb RAM on a 1Tb Samsung 850 EVO SSD.

i3-550: Single-core: 2419, Multi-core 5016

x3470: Single-core: 1238, Multi-core 4180

i7-870: Single-core: 2893, Multi-core 9324

While the specs suggest the x3470 to be superior silicon, my experience with a simple 1 for 1 for 1 swap demonstrated a significant reduction in performance. The Single-core index helps explain why my iMac became sluggish, but doesn't explain why things slowed. I bought the i7-870 on eBay for ~ $25... and fully appreciate the maximum performance this older machine can still deliver.

I successfully upgrade my iMac11,3 to a Xeon X3480. Jups, XEON processor for iMac. The only issue is that it doesn't show in the System Profiler. Making sure that the processor fits the same socket and matches the same TDP should be enough.

It's my 2nd CPU upgrade and everything works flawlessly. I also followed the Upgrade iMac Intel Core i3 CPU to Core i7 Guide.

из

How has this gone now that it's two years later? Still works fine?

из

Mine works like charm~ still strong

из

My iMac11,3 was upgraded to Xeon X3450 last month, everything works well except two places:

1. in system profile it sill show as i3, but other info is correct, e.g. 8MB cache;

2. Process monitor displays only one thread on the bar, but system use 8 threads; it is recognized and utilized correctly by BOINC under OS X and BootCamp Windows 8

So, conclusion is, for 27 iMac i3/i5 owners, go ahead replace it with 1156 Xeons. It is almost half priced of i7 -860/870.

Hope this helps someone in confusion.

I have installed the i7-870 into a couple of 27" iMac 2010. This is probably the cheapest upgrade (bang for bucks) on any iMac. i3 gets great boost, even the i5 is worth upgrading. It brings it up to performance of about a 2015 MacBook Pro 13" i5 I think. I paid $35 for the i7-870.

I did not see any hard issue prevent that; the only concern is no 21.5 2010 iMac was designed to handle 4C8T CPU, it is possible that BIOS refuse to take new CPU, or it powers up but brings heat issue. Anyway, for an 8-year old iMac and dirty cheap Xeon, everything is worth to try. Have fun!

из

I don't think you can do that in a 21" 2010. Remember that the CPU in the 21" originally has a TDP of 75W and the 27" uses a CPU with 95W. The 21" won't handle the higher power surge. I should have read this thread

Can I upgrade My CPU to Intel i7?

before I tried because i think I fried something and it never worked again :-(

On the other hand you learn by doing (and much more by mistakes!) and I have upgraded several 27" iMacs 2010 with the great i7 2.93GHz. The Xeon here works also of course in the 27" (it is also 95W)

из

I have upgraded 2x 2010 21.5” iMacs with the Xeon L3426 and they work absolutely fine, utilises all cores/threads and it even boosts 1 or 2 cores when needed. It is only 45w and the iMacs run cooler now. Shows as i3 in profiler, but who cares! 50% increase in multi core score on geek bench 4.

из

l3426 upgraded no issue in 2010 iMac 21 inch, performance is not that worth the time spent opening and disassembling, but i had to swap the GPU anyway

из

You mean you could install i7-870 into the 21 inch iMac 2010?
