Flashing ?, check. Install Disc 1 with "c" or "d" only ejects disc

Mid 2007 machine: Dropped from three feet onto tile floor. Was in sleep mode at the time. Picked it up and logged on bringing up the Internet it seemed fine. Shut down. Upon restart, flashing ? folder appeared. Tried resetting the pram. Tried booting the install disc 1 under the "c" and "d" restarts. The disc spins a bit and then ejects. Could be making a sound from there too, but its slight and uncertain about the sound. In any event, I replaced the hard drive and conducted each of the above with no change in result - that being ejecting the install disc and giving me a flashing ? screen. Also, note that when the magsafe power is put in, it doesn't glow (as it would green if charged and yellow if charging). Please advise. Thanks

Thanks for the first reply! Sounds pretty good, but I can't get an option for startup. If I try to startup from disc, the install disc 1 for example, it just spins that install disc for a bit and ejects itself, giving me the ? screen and there's nothing on the gray screen until it ejects. So its as if I can't even deal with the HD issue yet. Additional thoughts?

Hi! Sorry for your loss. :-( It sounds like the optical drive may be on the way out. In option mode, I'd try several CDs/DVDs, just to confirm that it kicks them all out indiscriminately, and it's not any particular disc. If they all get kicked out, it's probably the optical drive.

Do you have another Mac around? What you can do is put the install disc in that Mac, then connect the two via Firewire cable, and boot up the Mac that has the install media in it in target mode by holding down the "T" key while it boots, and you'll see indication on the screen that it is in target mode. Then, boot your laptop in option mode, and the install media (probably along with the hard drive of the other computer) will show up. Boot from the install media at that point, and see if you can get the OS installed and the machine basically working, and then replace the optical drive from there. Good luck!

Thanks, I reinstalled software from the installation discs via the target mode and another macbook. Yes, I believe the optical drive is bad and will proceed with the diagnostics in that vein before ordering up an new one. Thanks rdklincorporated for the posted advice!

Flashing ? means can't find startup disk, looks like you broke the drive, but when you installed the new HDD you didn't do the last final steps necessary. First off, it may simply be you forgot to format the drive. Second, you need to specify the startup disk, hold down option at startup and choose the HD. This can also be done in system preferences once booted up.
