Is patching cracked interior of messenger bag a good idea?

I know this is a really old post, but it was at the top of my search results when I google for why Timbuk2 didn't consider a peeling liner to be covered under their warranty. It cost me $27 to ship the bag to them for inspection, and will cost another $25 to get it repaired and returned. I plan to pay it, and to never buy another bag from Timbuk2 again. I prefer to spend my money with companies that take their own warranties seriously.

I'd take it to a fabric store, find an old lady that looks like she has been sewing all her life and get some real professional advice. They probably have exactly what you need.

Timbuk2 has a repair program where the interior TPU on the flap can be replaced for a flat fee of $25 including the return shipping back to you.

You can absolutely patch the TPU liner to keep the water resistant. Additionally, Timbuk2 offers paid repairs to replace the TPU liner.

I’ve found that contact cement works very well. lay it on and let it dry for 24 hours

I read about heating the liner to get it to re-adhere to the fabric. I was not successful with this approach did not get consistent results. I finally scraped off the remaining loose liner then applied multiple coats of spray on waterproofing. This is not ideal, but the bag continues to be useable without shedding TPU.

The bag I have is from 2005 or 2006. its been great but for a bag that got used once in a while to basically travel to Maui carry on to and fro maybe less than 10 times( many other backpack or bags used) to grandmas house and taken care or and spent most its life on a shelf in my closet, It is super surprising that the TPU liner has dried and cracked like i used it as a messenger bag DAILY! Looks like there is no luck with the company that stated blocks from where i still work. La Mission !

Maybe Ill spray or paint some Flex Seal White after I peal all the liner.

All my Timbuk2 Messenger bags have this issue. I have a dozens of them. On one of them, I just peeled everything off. It minimized the structure of the whole bag since the TPU helped add rigidity, but it did work and gone are the mess. Never buying Timbuk2 products again until they replace the inner TPU lining with another material - just please use nylon ripstop of something.

Yes my interior lid is shredding. i just applied 3M Duct Tape to the entire flap. . I took my time, it looks professional.

All is well. I LOVE this old commando commuter. The ziipper also failed on the command ( to unzip and lay flat for your PC in TSA). No worries Since TSA does not make me take it out any more ( PRE CHECK Y'ALL) I just tombed it by stiching up the whole thing with Dental Tape. That stuff is super strong.

Works great. The Messenger Bags far exceed any back pack for usabilty while flying. MY XL fits under ANY seat and has a handle on the side for putting- pulling in and out from under seats.

I LOVE this bag. I love the metal slip clips rather than the Plastic clips too.

Does anyone know if a heat gun or hair dryer could be used to carefully 'melt' the lining back to the fabric? I have an Ortlieb fabric bag with an interior coating that's starting to become separated from the fabric. I'm hoping I can fix it up this way as well. Has anyone done this?

I tried that with my messenger bag and the heat released the lining as much as it remelted. The heat tended to warp the fabric. I had better success removing the lose lining and retreating with a waterproofing spray.
