What if LCD is bad but external monitor works?
what if LCD is bad blacked out, but external monitor works? is it just a bad LCD?

If only the backlight is bad, but everything else works you can shine a flashlight through the Apple Logo on the back of the screen and look for an image on the front.

Could be, could also be a bad backlight circuit or bad LVDS connector, bad video signal....you'll have to tear it down to take a closer look:-)
