Slow charging time. Charging with 2.3 watts

Hi.

I have cleaned everything after someone spilled coca-cola on my macbook air 13" mid 2013.

After cleaning all components works, even did a full reinstall of yosemite.

But the charging time is extremely long. From 2% to 100% it took over 20 hours. According to batteryhealth it is charging with 2.3 watts.

Yes I have tried other chargers with the same result.

I changed the I/O board cable and suddently it charged with full power. But the next day when inserting the charger it is charging slow again with 2.3 watts.

So... are there any fuses I can change?

Or is it the battery that needs to be changed? Battery age 1.7 years, cycles 93, original max 7150mAh, health 95%.

But the health got to 99% when the charger was charging full. Now it is back to 95% when charging with 2.3 watts.

Taking it to a repair shop wont do any good...because one of the LSI indicators on the logic board is red. Yes I have reset SMC.

Update

I have bought a new battery and a new I/O board. But it is still charging with 2.3 watts.

Anyone know if it is a charge circuit on the logic board?

The new battery showing 106% health, Current max: 7608 mAh, original max 7150 mAh.

Interesting.. I disconnected the battery before going to bed, then it had about 70%.

This morning I connected the battery and inserted the charger. I noticed that the charger was giving 44W with a monitor, the app "battery health" also showed full charging speed. After a few minutes it decreased to 2.4 watts again. :/

Hello, did you find any solution for your problem?

I have the same case with water :(

из

@igor Ivanovski - How about creating your own question with all of your details as this one is over a year old.

из

Igor: Still havent solved the problem. Only charging 2.3W.

из

Using the app Battery Health. Charging with 2.5W

Tried to reset SMC and changed battery.

Mike and Igor,

There is probably damage to the charging circuit. Sometimes it is one single component, some other times it is a whole bunch of them.

It can be repaired by someone with the right tools, experience, and access to spare parts.

However, if the problem resulted from liquid damage and that liquid damage is not addressed properly, there is a high risk of further deterioration of the components and traces on the board.

For one, cleaning must be done using a professional ultrasonic and proper cleaning agents.

Once done and the board is clean, the charging circuit can be assessed for damage and repaired.

If you feel like addressing it yourselves, you have to find the board number, the schematics, and follow the circuit using a multimeter. If you find the culprits, you can proceed to replace them using used parts from donor boards (sometimes necessary, in order for them to be programmed) or new spare parts when possible.

If you like to have it repaired for you, check my profile for a link to the nearest qualified board technician that can handle this kind of repair. Many of them on that page repair Mac board, accept mail-in repairs, and offer a valid warranty.

@rany Gee, kind of smacks of maybe SPAM? Do I really have to have a "professional ultrasonic"? Really, send it to Lebanon? Just how much is the duty and shipping charges to and from the Middle East and how long does it take?

из

@mayer if you click on the link on my profile you'll see close to 30 names, none except my business are affiliated with me. Then if you want to debate the usefulness of pro ultrasonic cleaning vs. a toothbrush to clean underneath the SMC for example, or remove all corrosion and render every drop of solder shiny and make corroded joints stand out, I'll gladly listen to your arguments.

@Mike & @Igor Ivanovski

Can you both download this app: CoconutBattery take a screenshot of the console with the system under charge and again running off battery. Post them in an answer so we can see them.

Also see if resetting the SMC helps. Follow this Apple T/N: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

Hopefully we can get to the bottom of your problem.

@Mike - Any luck on getting a CoconutBattery screenshot so we can see what you're facing here. Without some hard data to work with not much I can offer you.

@dan @ Mike

at the moment the macbook pro is given to official Apple service for diagnostic .

We all know that apple wont make any service on the logic board if the diagnostic find something wrong.

As i have seen, small chip for controlling the power for the battery has been probably burned from the water... and if i am right, apple service will only accept to put new logic board which i don't even want to ask for a price.

After i get the results from the "doctor" i will decide if i am going to order that chip and replace on my own , or i will get over it and charge my macbook forever.

If anyone has advice for me and Mike, you are more welcome!

I will keep updating you

p.s. I did SMC, hardware check (nothing shows wrong), i change the charger..... still charging with 2.8 - 3.3w (which takes more then 20h to charge 100%)

here is the pic

Thanks for the info! Stay in touch!

из

thank you Rany for the support!

Today i took my MBP from apple service and fortunately or unfortunately , the diagnostic and all the check they did says NO errors! Now probably i came to the point where Mike is with his problem.

The service guy said: if you didn't tell me what the problem is i wouldn't find it....

I have no further ideas for my MPC :( Still charging with 2.8w

из

The power on mine is connected all the time... a new logic board is kind of expensive.. even used ones on ebay.

из

I am replacing it with a new and better logic board :)

I have the same issue, exept i didnt spill anything on my computer, anyone found a solution to this?

The issue appears to be the feedback circuit between the battery & SMC, and SMC telling the charger how much of a charge the battery can handle at that time point. There could be an issue within the battery or how SMC is communicating to the charger or how SMC is determing how full the battery is.

I have quite a few MB Pro's in the field and I don't have any that's exibiting this odd problem. Most of the time the MOSFET's burnout or the comparator logic. This is somewhere in between.

из

Do you think this is repairable without logic board replacement?

из

Your issue is different as you may have damaged the circuit with your mis-wired battery. Focus on your Q.

Try This: To address these issues, apply the MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.4 or the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.4 to the affected computer.

Hi All,

I noticed the post is a year old but this might help others.

I had issues which lead to the final issue of slow charging. Long story short, changed my keyboard with a poor quality one. Some key were not working so I decided to pull the battery connector while under load (while powered on). This shorted my battery showing X on the battery icon. Changed the keyboard with a quality one.

I purchased a new battery but was for another Mac model, was still was not working with out Magsafe charger. Having left that battery in appeared to short my Magsafe charger.

I purchased a battery and charger which both was said to be genuine, however charging was very slow. Took over a day to charge and would power down in 2-3 hours. I decided to order a top battery, NewerTech which was the one I had before that I shorted.

Still having slow charging issues, so I purchased a charger directly from Apple. When connecting the first charger which was said to be genuine, CoconutBattery states charging with 2.98 Watts but when connecting with the charger from Apple it states charging with 5.86 Watts then goes up to 6.08 Watts.

I have only installed the new battery in today and started to use the new charger. I am yet to calibrate the battery with the MacBook Pro today. However already showing signs of charging at a faster rate.

Maybe purchase a charger directly from Apple, it will be a good investment and might well solve your problem.

However, I will feedback my findings once I have calibrated my MacBook Pro.

Good luck Mike and Igor

Unfortuantely, I already am using an official Apple charger. I even tried with the charger plug that comes built-in with the Thunderbolt display from Apple. No dice.

Hi Interceptor,

I have now calibrated my MacBook Pro but it is still taking a long time to charge. My next step would be to change the Magsafe Dc-In board.

Have you tried this?

Has anyone else tried?

I can only imagine this to be the issue now as my MacBook Pro is otherwise working fine, only one way to know. I believe as I installed the incorrect battery this shorted my Magsafe charger and something internally in my MacBook.

If no joy with the DC-In board change, I may look to have someone have a look at the logic board or may just live with the slow charge.

из

I've changed battery, DC-IN board, charger - no luck! MBA 2013 (13')

I have the same problem and changing the DC-in board did not improve. I'm stuck at around 5 Watts and as we speak, because the computer is doing hard work it's even on 0.04 Watts. Not OK at all..
