backing up or transferring music from model 8541

I would like to know how I may back-up or transfer my music from the 2002 1st generation-scroll wheel, Model 8541, 10GB iPod to my laptop. I have gone to the iPod store and Best Buy and they do not have a transfer device with the correct adapter/port that fits this device since it does not have a USB port.

Can someone help me?....PLEASE! Looked into this a dozen times over the past 5-6 years at various times, then give up. Found this site tonight and have hope.

THANK YOU & appreciate any insights you can offer.

I apologize for not stating my question more clear. I am in need of the actual connection pieve to connect my 1st generation iPod, model 8541 to my computer to transfer my music to my laptop. I know how to tranfer the songs to another iPod once I can connect my "old" iPod. This is the question. Where can I get the wire/cable to fit into the port to connect my iPod to my laptop? The first generation iPods do not have USB capability to connect. I do not have the music from this 1st generation backed-up anywhere. It was a gift and the person who gave to me in 2002 gave it to me with all of the music/songs already uploaded on it. if anyone can help me and would like to call me live to tell me where what type of cable/wire will fit this to connect to laptop, pleae do. I appreciate any advice 312-502-0057.

Thank you.

What you're looking for is a Firewire to USB cable.

You can get one at an Aplle store or Radio Shack, Best But, places like that. They're pretty common, so it shouldn't be hard to find.

All your information is on your computer that you used to put it on the iPod in the first place. Just plug your new one in to the same computer and set it up.

Thank you for your repsonse. The music is not backed-up to my laptop. The iPod was a gift in 2002 and they loaded all of the music for me from their computer before giving to me for my birthday. Looking for the wire/cable that will enable for me to connect to my laptop to download what is on the iPod-1st generation- m8541. Someone stole my newer version Nano, so do not have any music, without starting over, that I can transfer to a new iPod when I buy it. Can you provide any advice?

backing up the content on the iPod is possible.

you have to manage the content manually

after you've done that - you can access the iPod in finder/windows explorer

open the "drive" that is assigned to your iPod and then go to "iPod_Control\Music" - there are folders called F00, F01 - and so on.

in those folders is your music - but the files faf names like CHLD.mp3, EXFL.mp3 and so on - this is not a problem, itunes ignores the tintle of an mp3 - it only uses the ID3 tags inside the file

you can simply copy those files to your computer - but be aware - copy protected files will still have the DRM stuff in it

Thank you for your reply. I am in need of having a way to connnect the M8541 to my laptop. This is the issue. What type of cable/wire is avaialble? I can download the music once i get it physically attached to the computer, but can't find the cable to do so since the 1st generation has a different port, not a USB. i need something that has connector for different port on one end and USB on the other end. Any advice?

The first and second generation iPod used firewire cables to charge and sync

I think there is a piece of software for mac called senuti that might do it for you automaticly and name the files correctly according to the ID3 tags.

I do believe that the plug on the 1st generation iPods were a FireWire of some sorts. Do you have a firewire plug on your computer?

If your iPod has a Click Wheel and your computer has a USB 2.0 port, you can charge your iPod and sync your library at the same time using the included USB cable. If your iPod doesn't have a Click Wheel, then you'll need to use FireWire or the iPod Dock Connector to FireWire and USB 2.0 Cable (part number M9688G/A).
