To the Tekkies: Not charging / water spill 820-3662-03

Block Image

Hi,

just got my hands on a 15" late 2013 MBP with a tiny water issue (bottom of the case) Its working fine on Power - but the Battery is not charging.

i allready did smc reset and PRAM NVRAM Reset.

only 2 of the water indicators are red. One on the left Battery and the other is on the right side of the battery connector board. all other Indicators are white. there is no sign of corrosion - or signs of liquid on the mainboard - i have seen plenty....

I took a multimeter to check the battery and have measured several points with different voltage readings. (from right to left on the Batt. Connector board: 11,05V / 7,37V / 3,68V comming from the Cells).

When powered on - the main board Battery connector (left to right) gives following reading:

Batt NEG - sys 0,02V (possibly 0V)

Batt NEG - sda 3,38V

Batt NEG - scl 3,38V

Batt NEG - BATT 3S 1 12,84V

Batt NEG - BATT 3S 2 12,84V

Batt NEG - BATT 3S 3 12,84V

Batt NEG - BATT 3S 4 12,84V

Checking the Battery Connector (not connected to the mainboard) i get:

Batt NEG - sys 0,3V

Batt NEG - sda 0,18V

Batt NEG - scl 0,17V

Batt NEG - BATT 3S 1 0V

Batt NEG - BATT 3S 2 0V

Batt NEG - BATT 3S 3 0V

Batt NEG - BATT 3S 4 0V

does it just need a new battery? is the Connector board from the battery damaged? i have sources for new batterys for late 2013 Retinas - and yes - i know that it is not a "servicable" Part.

all help is very appreciated !!!

btw- the residue on the Logicboard is from cleaning it - not from the spill..

Thanks, Mike

this is what i found on a polish site - i know this is not a late 2013 - but are the readings of the multimeter supposed to be the same?

Did you take the logic board completely out? There's stuff on the other side.

из

Dan, thank you for replying. Yes i have taken out and inspected the entire board. even with the magnifying lens i can see no corrosion. I cleaned it with isoprop alc and it looks like new...

Battery is still stuck to 8% and it says battery not charging.

btw it will not power up from battery.

I put the cocnutbattery information screenshot up now.

из

OK, then your charging logic is having problems on the main logic board.

ZZZ...

Here are the readings for:

"Red probe on ground, black probe on SCL pin of battery, then on SDA pin of battery, in diode mode with multimeter. Post voltages. "

in diode mode i get:

SCL 474

SCA 473

and (when hooked up to the charger)

SCL 678

SCA 679

I think i found 2 Chips doing "Voltage regulation":

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/LP8548B1S...

they are labeled 48b0 and 49b0

is it possible that they are doing what the ISL6259 used to do? or should i be able to find a ISL6259 on the board?

Cleaning the board with isopropyl alcohol doesn't get underneath the chips. You may want to consider sending your board out to someone who does board-level repair and cleaning, like what Luis Rossman does in NYC. If you do repairs on a regular basis, you may want to invest in an ultrasonic cleaner to repair water damaged boards yourself.

Here is a link to a youtube video that may explain things further. Please excuse the language.

Luis Rossman - Ultrasonic cleaner for repairing Macbook logic boards

Luis, thanks for your Help!

i have seen many very helpfull posts of You !

I own an ultrasonic cleaner (& love it) is like yours in the video- not a jewllery cleaner 8-)

The logic board had no signs of corrosion or liquid contact - not even under the microscope. it in fact did have two indicators red as i mentioned - both on the connector board of the battery.

that is why i started measuring all of the points mentioned above - because i am suspiscios that the battery electronics are faulty.

Is what voltage readings should apply when the battery is being charged?

Any information on this? is it normal that the voltage on the sys pin on the battery board is reading 0V?

Thanks again for some more information.

BTW where is the isl6259 located on the 820-3662 board?

i watched your video in which you jumpered som lost pins - when the macbook (older Mod) was not charging.

BTW i live in Germany - so im not interfering with your business in NY !

really appreciate all youre posts !

Mike

FYI - John Parker replied to you not Luis ;-} Luis is also a great contributor here as well!

из

Yes, Dan is correct--I am not Luis, but I am also learning from his channel and posts at a prodigious rate. Best of luck in your own endeavors. :)

Sorry john, i got this wrong because of the vid post...

thanks alot

Red probe on ground, black probe on SCL pin of battery, then on SDA pin of battery, in diode mode with multimeter. Post voltages. There are no schematics available for this laptop but this should be solvable through use of brains, same $@$* as every other machine.

It is not an SMC issue because it sees the battery so that will likely not see much. You'll want to check and see that current sensing resistors by ISL6259 are good. I can't tell you where that is since there is no documented schematic or boardview for this, so you will have to use your brain and find it. There will be two black resistors going to each side of a cap, and each side of that cap going to ISL6259. The opposite side of the two black resistors will be going to a resistor that comes from a 16 or 18v line when the charger is plugged in. Measure those.

And for F's sake, stock batteries if you plan on fixing these so you can see if it is just the battery

P.S.

It is a serviceable part, remove old battery and put new one in. Apple service manual is for people with no brain, toss it in the trash.

Now THAT sounds like Luis. ;)

i will start using my brain now 8)

and ill try to find that ... isl6259 on the board.

thanks zzz youre help is deeply appreciated!

из

btw - im not planning on doing this for a living.... like my grandfather - i love to get technical things working again when i get them in my hands... and up to now... i´d say 5 out of 6 do. learning more each day...
