The late 2005 Power Mac G5 was introduced in October, and discontinued in August the next year. There were three configuration options, one dual core processor at 2.0 GHz, one dual core at 2.3 GHz with model number A1177, and one dual core dual processor (quad core) at 2.5 GHz.

Not able to boot DVD for install of OS

Hi,

I now have a PowerMac G5 i bought it but seller didnt know what model i only know it is Late 2005.

When i boot from DVD whether it be Leopard or Tiger it does the same thing gives a gray screen for Leopard a couple of seconds and for Tiger 1-2 minutes.

After that it gives Folder with Finder Logo And ?

I tried resetting NVRAM i tried the button within the machine (forget the name).

Also tried holden OPTION it only gave me Grey screen with Refresh button and Arrow button??

I tried everything within my power you people are my last hope.

(Seller said it worked fine but he took the HDD)

EDIT :

I try to boot from burned disks atm i dont have the original disks anymore :(.

I put in a 160GB Caviar Blue WD hardrive in it together with a Seagate Barracuda 320GB Hardrive

I tried switching one out and still didnt work

Do i need to give my serial number?

I fixed the problem myself :)

Thanks for trying to help me!

Requirements :

Another (Working) Mac (Maybe a HackingTosh will do haven't tried that )

One USB Drive at least 8GB

One or two harddrives (IF your PowerMac G5 doesn't have one already)

What I did :

Made USB with OS X Leopard on it(Via MacBook Air).

Boot from USB with Open Firmware (Looked it up on google)

First 2 times I made the USB it said it could not install third time BINGO!

I have used the same DMG file and USB third time it should work!

Installed OS X 10.5 Leopard (Just follow on-screen instruction it isn't hard at all)

(When it says Less Then One Minute Remaining it takes at LEAST 8 Minutes)

Proof (I added all the DDR2 RAM I had so that is why you see 7 GB DDR2 SDRAM) : http://i.imgur.com/mJCh770.png

Running some programs : http://i.imgur.com/q0VAuJY.png

As I thought this is a perfectly working PowerMac G5 hopefully someone finds this answer useful!

And surprise my DVD drive works (Tested it with some music) but for some reason it just doesn't want to boot off DVD.

Your machine does not find a valid operating system.

The interior reset button is called the CUDA switch.

Please tell us about the disks you are attempting to boot from, are they retail or gray (machine specific disks?

Have you put a new hard drive in? If so, please give us the specs on it.

The serial number on some of these is located around the rim of the panel door or on the back on a plate by the input ports.

Just give us the last four figures of your serial number. Just add one hard drive at a time. I'd start with the 320 GB first as it is probably a slower 1.5 GHz speed and more likely to work without a jumper. It will need to be formatted and system installed. I still need to know what your installations disks are and if you have an original.
