dying dvd/cd drive

Hi, I've got a dead or dying dvd/cd drive, it won't eject the dvd that is stuck.

I most likely need a new drive, which I can't afford right now. Now though there is a ticking noise that has suddenly started and I'm not sure what is causing it. Any help?

Thanks,

Kamie

Here's an earlier question and answer that might provide help in forcing your machine to eject the CD: Can´t eject cd

Is the ticking sound coming from the cd drive? Usually a ticking sound is an indication of a hard drive about to go out. I would back up your data IMMEDIATELY if I were you.

As for the disk drive, yeah lots of moving parts in those and it might just be dead. It's a common problem. Before you give up on it though, be sure to try the usual things like holding down the mouse button while booting up. That will sometimes eject a stuck disk.

Sometimes it won't come out because part of the insides are out of alignment and it's hitting the edge of the case. If that's the case you can help guide it out with something like a business card. More info here:

  • Obviously, press F12 to try ejecting.
  • Hold the click as you boot-up
  • Restart the computer whilst holding down Command-Option-O-F, to enter the Open Firmware prompt. Type "eject cd" without the quotes, and press return

If these don't work the drive is probably broken and the only way to get the disc is to open the computer and take apart the drive itself
