new 2tb h.d. not recognized by computer:

I bought a new 2tb h.d. from ifixit to replace the recently deceased 250 gig one that had been supplied by apple in 2007; but when I booted the computer to load tiger, the disk was not recognized. It was as if it did not exist! A question posted here last February told a similar story; but no one had answered. Is it possible to find a way to format and use the new h.d.? I am now using my external h.d. to run tiger, hopefully as a temporary measure. Once the new h.d. is up and running, I shall re load leopard and snow leopard and be happy once again.

I wrote to customer services at ifixit; and, to cut a long story short, once they knew the h.d. they had sent me did not register in disk utilities, they authorized a replacement, which will be sent off today. So, hopefully, the new h.d. will format properly and I shall be able to use it.

You need to format the drive before installing a system. Boot up from the system installation disk by holding down the "C" key. Go to the second screen, pull down menu, Utilities, Disk Utility. Select the drive on the left hand side and format it. Now install the system.

Thank you. I did do that; unfortunately, even using the C key, and for reasons I cannot fathom, disk utilities had no record of the internal hard disk, so I could not format it or load osx onto it. Therefore I had to use an external disk in order to have a working computer at all. It works, to a point; but to be able to use the 2tb internal disk would obviously be far better. The only other thought I have had is maybe the friend who put the 2tb disk in made some small slip, e.g. a connection not fully clicked into place. Is that a likelihood? If it is, tedious though taking the machine apart and replacing the disk again would be, (as well as galling to my friend's pride in his skill) it should be a simple enough matter to get the machine to work with the new internal disk. However, if, as the post elsewhere in this forum said, large capacity hard disks from ifixit's shop never do register in disk utilities, that is a waste of 2tb, of about £120, and speaks badly of ifixit who sell them.

I haven't personally installed larger than a 1.5 TB and had no problem with it. The next thing I would do is place it in the external enclosure and format and install the system.

Thanks Mayer, I shall have a try and let you know the outcome
