MacBook Pro suddenly shutdown , date and time reset to Jan 1.

Hi. My MacBook Pro (MD212) sometimes shutdown (not "gracefully") with no warning given. The date and time reset to Jan. 1 midnight. This happens when the notebook is on battery power. To be specific, it's more likely to happen when the remain battery is between 30%-60%. I have never experienced this issue when plugged in. And the sudden shutdown happens under both Yosemite and El Capitan.

Hey Starry,

You might have a bad battery. The time and date resets whenever there is completely no power source detected. This indicates that there is a complete disconnect between the battery and the board. Hence why it only happens when you are on battery power. It might be showing as 30%-60% but that can be hit or miss with a bad battery.

Best of Luck!

Thank you for your insightful analysis. I ordered a new battery and have mine replaced today. Unfortunately the problem persists. I think I have to have a look at the logic board.

Update: Much thanks! I reset the SMC and the new battery works with no problem. The shutdown issue no longer appears.
