got a weird one with an iPhone 5C. Replaced the screen but get a random or blank screen. However if the digitiser connector is not connected I get a picture 99% of the time. Click in the digitiser connector and off it goes. Have tried a couple of screens but no joy. Anyone got any ideas?

Check board connectors to make sure there is nothing in them blocking them / damaged pins.

Thanks Michael. I have been trying this. Under a magnifying glass there may be some damage to the pins nearest the power switch but not 100% definite. If I connect just the LCD I get a nice crisp image but if I connect the digitiser I typically get no or a poor image on the screen and an unresponsive touchscreen. Have tried using a small artists brush to gently clean out the connector and contact cleaner on a Q tip - still no joy. Am I right in thinking that if it is going to work then it will do so without the magnetic shield/screen screwed back in place? That would be a pain to have to keep doing.
Can you upload a good close up pic of the digitizer connector for me to see?

The connector looks ok. Have you tried a software reset or the original screen to see if it works?
The only bit I wasn't sure about was the top right pin as you look at it.
When I did the initial repair it worked for a while but the screen would slowly drift into a patchy/grid state but the touch screen was OK. In trying to resolve I managed to crack the new screen (D'oh) so ordered another.... In both cases I ordered a fully assembled replacement.
With any of the screens I get a clear picture on the screen as long as I don't plug the digitiser in. As soon as I do this it goes blank or mostly blank with grid lines and the touch screen doesn't appear to work.
I have tried a reset (holding down home and power button) and also disconnecting/reconnecting the battery but with no joy. It's getting to the point where I am thinking of just putting it on eBay as spares and repairs but would obviously prefer to fix.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
that it can be restored or does it make it unusable?
Of course with no touch screen I can't connect it to iTunes (as it sees it as locked with a pass code) or do an erase to disconnect it from iCloud. Does an erase via "find my iPhone" completely wipe the phone such
