when i go too turn on my aplle clamshell laptope it will load as usual but after loading and bringig up the desktope its all blank no program icons accept for the battery life, time of day, and there is a icon but its a printer icon

It's hanging up during the loading process. Start up from your system installation disk by inserting the disk and holding down the "C" key. Go to Utilities and run Disk Utility and try to repair the drive. If that fails I would reinstall my system. If that fails you need to replace the hard drive.
