Depends

there's power, or specifically, the TDP (Thermal Design Power), which refers to the heat dissipation capability of a particular CPU cooling system compatibility problems.

A small jump from one speed to another is possible - an Aluminum iMac with a socket-compatible processor that has the same, or lower, TDP as the originally installed processor.

Côte à côte les deux Core i5 et i7 tous deux compatibles avec les socket LGA115x.

Dear Sir,

Is it possible with Mojave 10.14 to use Safari, Mail and Text-editing on a iMac 27” Mid-2010 despite the unusable AMD 5670 after using the Dos1dude patch ?

Ok, I updated my i3 2010 27" imac with the i7 870 processor. Machine runs perfectly but the CPU fan is running at near full speed and not because the processor is hot. It starts running fast as soon as I hit the start button. No idea how to fix this. Any ideas would be gladly accepted!

This is a well known problem.

That is unlikely to be your CPU fan. More likely it is the proprietary Apple Hard Drive fan you are hearing.

Buy HDDFanControl (about $40) to fix the issue.

I was wondering how well the successful upgrades are doing after a few months. Are the machines still running well with no overheating problems?

I am looking to do the same with my mid 2010 i3 iMac since the i7 870 prices are dropping like stones.

Any updates especially around performance would be gratefully appreciated.

Update

Thanks EnglandGreen

I successfully switched the i3 550 processor for the i7 870 and dropped a Samsung 830 SSD in there as well for good measure.

Machine is working perfectly with no issues.

To anyone else considering the upgrade, I would wholeheartedly recommend it, the performance of the machine for encoding video etc. has doubled.

It wasn't actually too difficult, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the hardest I would put it at about 4.

Working like a champ. Never had a kernel panic, crash or freeze. Temperatures have been pretty much the same as the Core i3.

I use smcFanControl to keep it cool and you have to buy HDDFanControl to turn off the HDD fan. That's because of Apple's proprietary HDD temperature sensor that makes the HDD fan run at full speed if it is not plugged in.

My crappy Western Digital 3TB drive I installed at the same time crashed right after the install, and at first I thought it was the Core i7 or the 32Gb of RAM that I also installed at the same time. It turned out to be the drive. I installed a MacSales.com 256Gb SSD and I have had zero issues since.

Multiple Apple updates since (to 10.7.4 for example) and zero problems.

That was in the middle of April 2012. Now were's in July 2012 and it has been rock solid.

It's a great upgrade to keep your 2010 iMac almost as fast as 2012 Ivy Bridge.

I'm sorry, there isn't a question link to use, but here goes.

the issue about TDP Thermal design power only seems to relate to whether the same cooling system is used by Apple, for the i3 and i7. It's not a logic board issue.

That said, does anyone know why the logic board for all 3 models have different sky numbers?
