How do I reset my BIOS password on newer ASUS laptops?

I was playing around with the BIOS settings and somehow I fat fingered the password not once, but twice.. and now I'm locked out of the computer entirely. I was trying to figure out what the difference was between the "User" password, and the "Administrator" password - and the difference is that "User" won't allow the system to boot at all without that password.

I've tried pulling the main power from the tiny little motherboard, and this appears to make no difference with these newer laptops which don't have specific bios batteries to remove. Any suggestions?

So I followed his directions, but it didn't work for me. After a bit of searching, apparently the bios rescue password is tied to whatever the bios thinks the date is.. I can't get my Bios to go back any further than 2012/01/01 though (pulling the power on the motherboard for a few minutes achieved this). The video had a bios of 2002/01/02, which is way older than what I have. I'll have to keep looking.

I have an Asus notebook and every time I tun I on it instantly requires a BIOS password I've have it for 6 months now

  1. Boot while while pressing/holding F2 to get into the BIOS / UEFI
  2. When the enter password window appears then press Alt + r
  3. “Enter rescue password” window will appear, with YYYY-MM-DD

when u get that date go to this website : https://www.biosbug.com/asus.php

put the "YYYY-MM-DD" that shows on ur screen and it will generate a code.

put that code on the Rescue password and done.

u got reseted bios. Only works on Asus.

Thanks for trying, but this didn't work. Hitting Alt +r on the 'enter password' window just resulted in an asterisk being displayed a the entered password. Alt + r never got me to 'enter rescue password' screen. This may work with older versions of the BIOS, but I believe Azus considered this 'backdoor' a security issue and fixed it so it no longer works.

My Azus is no more than a doorstop. Azus charges a ridiculous amount to send in the computer to get the password reset. $1000!!

Worked like a charm. Thank you.

I did some more research on you laptop ,netbook with no cmos battery it has to use battery power and if disconnected will stay viable with static charge that remains in the board .So to drain the board disconnect the battery and hold down the power button for a few minutes then try it and see if it worked if it didn't,disconnect the battery again and leave the battery disconnected for several days till all residual power is drawn off when you think you have all the residual power drained away plug in and try again . Hope this works better

You will find links to a couple of BIOS (or more correctly UEFI) password recovery sites here:

https://therestartproject.org/wiki/UEFI_...

Manufacturers seem to have leaned on Google not to index such sites but you can still find them through the Russian search engine Yandex.ru

So every code seems to be the same except for the first character in Mihai's case it was "A" as the first character in my case it was "1" the rest is all the same "BLDABLA"

Hay?

I have been working on computers for many years now:

To clear your Bios and C moss open the back of the computer:

There is a small battery in the slot where the hard drive is red and black wires in it:

Unplug that plug wait 15 minutes then plug it back in this will clear all C moss and Bios:

Then you can open bios and C moss and re program to what ever you want to:

The ASUS Vivobook now has a lithium battery that is not removable and there is no longer the watch battery for the CMOS in the older Laptops.

Alguien encontró la solución para poder modificar la Bios? mi portatil es un asus E200HA y no he podido dar con la contraseña

из

I have been working on computers for many years now & Unfortantly this doesnt work on many of the newer laptops.

Thanks for the help however I have tried this does and apparently it does not work on newer (2017+) Asus laptops. The computer will not allow you to press alt + r to get a rescue password entry opportunity. I have become very familiar with the “ pastebin link” solution and for me it appears the only choice is to send it to ASUS or replace the motherboard. There is no “CMOS “battery to remove as I understand it their is a residual charge left on the motherboard that keeps the BIOS current and unplugging it will not help. I cannot change the boot option and use an USB, port, SD card or anything to flash, recover or reset and this laptop as with most newer ones does not have any jumper opportunity to reset a password. Looks like there's no way around it except to send it in. Oh a funny side note, tech support at Best buy geek squad member told me I might as well just throw the computer away! I should have got his boss and in educated but I chose Mercy as I need Mercy. Coming from a background of technical support/sustaining engineering for electro-mechanical machinery I am at least confident that was not the right answer! Apparently ASUS is tight-lipped on revealing the override password reset and understandably so. I am sad … I am going to the Asus YouTube channel and contact “JJ” all people should know and just ask him for some advice. Suggestions?

Oh thank God! Some mysterious miraculous way I somehow figure it out the administrator password that my ex-wife had set and forgotten! I know that doesn't help you my friends but at least celebrate with me that I just saved $700. Thank you everyone for your input and I hope your journey to find the solution on your end goes well

из

So the power bleed suggestion given by @jimfixer didn't resolve the issue?

из

Hi! Unfortunately the power balloon option is not going to work because it will take years for the residual power to drain off the motherboard per the advice of another contributor on iFixit who has more computer electrical engineering than I do. This is how the motherboard is able to retain machine language and BIOS when the hard drive is removed or the battery is removed or if the laptop is not plugged in. That is the same no power source whatsoever except for the residual electrical charge already on the board.

With all Windows 8 laptop or computers that have problems with Bios Security Password. What you can do enter your log in password or your normal log in password into the Bios Security. Press Enter and it will direct you to the Bios windows. On top search for Security go down to all the password type the same password into it and then enter when a window pops up to re-enter new password leave it blank. Just press Enter and it will just direct you to your normal log in.

My PC decided that it wasn’t going to let me edit ANYTHING in BIOS, then it completely locked me out. I try to enter it by hitting ESC(ASUS Laptop), but it no longer works.

I wish i actually had an answer for you. I was actually gonna see if anyone was able to get anyhelp without paying an arm and a leg. I recently got a ASUS Gaming laptop. Ended up getting a hacker problem and fience decided to do i guess a factory reset. He entered the administrative password i guess and cant remember where he put it. Can you use letters numbers and anything else in the passwords. or is it just plain numbers. I have a whole new ballgame if you can use anything. I will be sending it back lol. Ill be here all day

I decided to review my answer and the answers posted concerning the subject. In retrospect the short answer is "it all depends on how old your laptop is." All of the listed solutions above can and do work if your laptop is old enough. Now this part is my opinion and my opinion is that prior to 2017 models pulling out the battery or going to the paste bin method or changing the date or holding a function button plus another key or potentially all viable options IF and only if your Asus is pre 2017. After this date your option is to literally replace the motherboard (DIY) OR send it back to the manufacturer (ASUS.) Is now 2023 and I originally posted my findings in 2020. I have yet to find any other solution beyond this. I have empathy for all y'all. Please if you find a solution please post it for all to see. I was fortunate enough to finally remember my password.

Use an SPI Programmer with an appropriate pin count SOIC adapter & flash the Integrated Circuit (IC) on the motherboard which holds the BIOS/UEFI software with a new UEFI/BIOS(firmware).

You can find SPI programmers of vary costs.

The DIY method of assembling an SPI Programmer from a 'Maker'/electronics hobby shop kit is by far the most cost efficient. You're just soldering electronic parts onto a PCB is actually very easy after some preparation. For example, learning a few soldering techniques from Youtube like using wicks & soldering pads then laying surface mount parts on top then applying the iron to reflow the solder.

I tried downloading the latest bios update from Asus, but that doesn't seem to work, maybe I'm doing something wrong. Can you help me? :)

My story is even funnier. I don't need my Asus X411UA laptop from 2018 anymore so I prepared it to give it to a family member. Did all the cleaning and removing of my personal data on it, had to do a lot of updates (I'm using a better laptop since over a year already so the Asus one got a little "rusty" in the software) and thus had multiple system restarts where I used my pw just fine.
After I was done with the cleaning I went into BIOS settings, found the Security part, clicked on the "Admin-Password" field, it asked me to write current pw which I did and down below were 2 lines for the NEW pw + repeat. Which I of course LEFT BLANK since the new owner doesn't need any pws. I DIDN'T typed ANYTHING in those fields. It asks "do you really want to reset the password?" - I click YES; Save+Exit/reboot... and guess what? It asks for bios PW again.
Totally confused I write my previous pw and... "INVALID PASSWORD". I leave the field blank (since I thought when I left the fields blank when resetting the pw maybe the PW is now just a blank too" -> "INVALID PASSWORD"
After a long research tried everything in the comments above - "INVALID PASSWORD".
ALT+R doesn't work it just writes the "R" (covered by *) ...
I'm LOST!

Had the bios user password issue on an Asus UM425I. This laptop had a faulty keyboard causing even more issues. Customer told me the bios password but it would not work, even after plugging in an external usb keyboard. After many frustrating attempts to guess or clear the password, I typed 1234 and it worked! I did leave the battery disconnected for about an hour. No idea if this helped or not.

из

@ididit My previous pw was actually a sentense with big letters, numbers in between and special marks at the end. I will try what you did but I'm pretty sure that ASUS have not set my PW to 1234 after I deleted it ...

@cccpredarmy I personally set different passwords for both the Admin and User users. I only cleared Admin's password---as you described---and not User's password. On reboot, I was prompted for a password and could only get into the MyAsus UEFI with User's password. This was on a 2023 Zenbook 14X.

------

My story is that my ASUS laptop in new condition had a battery issue. Fortunately, I was still in an extended holiday return period, and ASUS and Geek Squad represenatives recommended bringing it to the store for an exchange. At Best Buy, I learned I was required to remove the UEFI password first; the Geek Squad needed to be able to reinstall Windows. I called a friend to relay the Admin password I had written down, and I removed it with a Geek Squad technician observing me. We both had no idea why the UEFI was still locked afterwards.

Even with the technican's advocation, it was decided that I could not exchange/return the laptop. I had little money and no income at the time, and the laptop was important to me. ASUS told me I could send it to them for repair, but for security reasons, I did not want to lose physical control of the laptop. Best Buy would not extend my exchange period for that process, nor probably any reason. Moreover, I did not think there would be any cost to me for sending a laptop to ASUS until I saw this thread.

I finally tried User's password and removed it. I was no longer prompted for a UEFI password and successfully made an exchange for another unit also in new condition. I am now checking if it has the same battery issue.

I feel a lot of anxiety thinking about how I almost accidently closed the password generator before writing the UEFI passwords down and how I might have resorted to an approach that could have worsened the situation. (In discussing the extremities of my options, the Geek Squad technician mentioned getting the entire motherboard replaced by a third-party---an approach I found discomforting and unrealistic.)

From a security perspective, I appreciate that laptops are more locked down. However, this reeling experience has me much more concerned for customers. The means to maliciously brick ASUS laptops is low, and the cost placed on the owners---whomever bricked it---is untenable. Consumers need a no- or low-cost solution from laptop manufacturers, including ASUS. I pray for @fayesaeteurn and each of you in situations similar to mine.

Thanks for your advice, however mine had ONLY ONE UEFI pw - doesn't matter if it's Admin or User one - it simply stopped working after I deleted it so now It justs asks for some weird PW I never ever used or installed on my laptop. I didn't even have a Windows pw on it.

In fact that was the first time I "played" with the UEFI pw in my entire PC-life and I got THIS ...

из

Don't thank me; I thought you probably only had the one pw, and I could not think of more to help when you most need it.

The window you mentioned has terrible UI language. I input my old password and clicked on the blue `Clear old password` (or something like this). I was surprised I was asked for my old password again, realizing that I was taken to a new window to actually clear it. I would have done exactly what you did if I chose the other button.

Before this, I've never owned a PC I could mess up the BIOS in just the settings. There was always the CMOS battery, a jumper, and/or a USB port for flashing.
