iPhone 6 Board - Help Identifying and repairing a loose capacitor...

Block Image

Hey all,

I need help identifying and repairing the above capacitor highlighted in red in the picture.

I'm new to board level repairs... After removing the shield that covers this area of the iPhone 6 main board (to investigate water damage) I noticed this fuse looked off-centre, and further more noticed it was detached from the end closest to where I must have torn the shield from the board.

Can anyway tell me what implications this has? I would like to re-solder it to the board, should I remove it entirely and start again or try to patch it up with solder/glue (if it's still making contact)?

Any advice would be awesome! I can provide pictures of the actual board if necessary.

Best,

Will

What problem are you trying to solve?

Chasing down this cap is important only if this phone is otherwise working.

Hi Jessa, I had sent you an PM but I'm in the process of trying to resolve liquid damage, currently awaiting a battery, I have since cleaned the board.

Although liquid damage is the primary issue I had noticed this loose capacitor after I had (forcefully) removed the shields, thus I suspect any further attempt to bring the board back to life after the liquid damage may well be hindered by this loose capacitor, so I wanted to find out what this capacitor does and fix it, before I attempt to see if my liquid damage clean up has had any effect.

Does this help?

hi miss jess could you point me in the right direction... i am trying to purchase capaitors for my bare iphone 6. would you by any chance guide me in the right direction... what websites or links do you have or know that supply the different capacitors i need for my motherboard...

Bare iPhone 6? If by bare board you mean a board with no components on it then this is unlikely to yield a working phone. Some of the chips must be programmed and can't just be swapped in as new.

Thanks for the question.

Man, board level repairs are tricky. If this repair is for a customer my suggestion would be to take pictures of the damaded components and give it back to them.

This will be hard to do if you habe not set the correct expectation with a water damage repair.

Board level repairs cannot be guaranteed even with a tech that is well versed in soldering and board repair. It's all best effort at that point. Especially if you were investigating water damage.

If you are not comfortable cunducting board repair then you shouldn't do this repair.

You may be able to resolder the component back onto the leads but there's no telling if it will work or not. Plus with there being possible water damage anything you do may have no affect.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

Try the website IPad rehab,

They have an extensive number of tutorials on what your looking for.

You will probably get the answer quicker by asking her the question form, she is very helpful to people like you that are just getting started.

If your new and you want some work on motherboards to do, I have 2 iPhone 6's that I need some microSoldiering done to replace connectors if you can do that type of repairs and diagnosis of the 2 boards I have. If your interested and you can offer me a super good deal on the work I can send you a few up close photos for you to look at to see if you can handle a repair that is as extensive as what I have wrong. I buy and resell iPhones and I'm looking for a new repair service person. The service I had for several years closed because the guy died, so I now need a new repair service company for all my motherboard work. I average having between 6-10 iPhones sent out for repair per month. If you can get the job done, let me know your interested and if you need to see the photos or if you just want me to send the motherboards on to you.

Thanks,

Gary

Thanks Gary,

I know of Jessa Jones, I thought it would be best approaching our general forums before asking the master of iPad Rehab :)

Are you UK based? - I am only starting out with board level repairs but my company does all sorts of repairs. We could work something out, I'm always looking for a bit of B2B!
