PS4 still not working after replacing optical drive

Last week my ps4 started showing a message "unrecognized disc". After inserting a disc, the disc slides in, makes a little laser scratching noise, but it doesn't load.

On the top right corner of the tv I notice an image of a disc spinning. The disc tries to eject itself but doesn't and continues a 2nd time until the unrecognized disc message appears in a black box with a question mark in it.

I replaced the optical drive with a used one I purchased from eBay, but it sounded worse and didn't fix the problem. Maybe it was defective item, I'm planning on returning it for a refund.

My question is what should I do? Try buying another optical drive or send in the ps4 for service since my warranty is expired (The cost is $150). Also could it be something else other than the optical drive?

Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

Seems like the optical/disc drive is commonly the culprit. I noticed a lot of gamers on YouTube and other sites posting the same problem and usually replacing the drive fixes the problem. I think the disc drive I received wasn't working to begin with. If the disc drive isn't the problem, what else could it be? This ps4 is only 13-14 months old and it was purchased new.

I replaced new laser but its still say "unrecognize disc" so I put that whole drive into another ps4 and it works because the problem is on the logicboard from the dvd drive or the main motherboard. If someone could help me figure out which component is failing I very appreciate and in return I would like to give you a free repair. Thank you

I would suggest sending it to sony as you have already swapped it out and that did not work so it may be something worse but without further diagnosis we cannot help much

Hi Joel, the problem is that the optical drive and the motherboard have serial numbers that are married, if you change the whole drive this is going to work since it doesn't have the right serial number.

I used my daughter board on the used disc drive that I received. I'm sending my ps4 in for service.

Just going to throw this one out here because I had a similar issue with a PS4 (except it would attempt to read the disc for about two minutes, make a loud noise, continue to read, then throw the error).

On the bottom of the optical disk drive is a component which contains a web of white plastic gears. It's held to the assembly by three screws. Unscrew these and carefully remove the unit, and at the bottom (near where the disc is inserted into the system) will be a pair of rollers joined by a white plastic piece.

In my case, the left roller was not very loose when pressed down on, and would often stick to the plastic. I removed the right roller, and reseated the plastic piece in between and that roller, checking to make sure that both would easily flex up and down when pressed upon. Reassembled everything and just gave it a try, and sure enough my blu ray movies boot right now. The drive is also much quieter now, though I'm trying to deduce the reason to the loud scraping sound that comes during the eject (it doesn't damage the discs, but its an unpleasant sound nevertheless).

If your drive still doesn’t work after replacing. It’s your motherboard FUSE. Google & replace the F6202 fuse (check the others near it as they could be a problem also). This fixed it for us. No new drive or motherboard needed.

Is this for OG/1st gen PS4 fats too? I heard this was mainly a thing with the slims, and with the slims it would just not do anything. My problem is that it'll try to spin the disc up for 15-30 seconds or so first, but ultimately give an unrecognized disc error :(

I realize this was a couple years ago but posting in hopes it may help someone else. I just replaced my laser too and still got the unrecognized disc error. I pulled the top cover off to check the fan side and noticed a tiny spring sitting there loosely. I put it back where it goes and now my discs are being read. Maybe check for that before anything else.

Also adding this to help others.

Our Ps4 Pro bought used over a year ago stopped reading some games, it did this a while ago after a strip and clean but then it was fine (can't say anything I actually did sorted it).

However I bought a replacement "New" laser deck from Fleabay from a reputable seller for the day when this got worse (aboit 3 months).

when the day came i fitted the new laser deck but it wouldn't read any disk at all.

Decided to buy a replacement drive thinking that sellers on ebay are just selling old lasers they think work as new.

Blu ray drive again "New" from a different reputable seller was clearly used as there were marks all over the plastics but definitely brand new ribbon cables.

This drive on 1st try would not take in disks at all.

Then I had to take the motherboard out and fuse F6201 was blown (number could be wrong I'm going from memory). I checked F6202 and it was fine.

Okay, bad timing, bridged it with solder to see if that would get it working and the "New" drive then blew F6202 so I bridged that as well.

At this point I knew I couldn't safely try the new drive so I took the laser out of it and put it in my old drive aaaaaaaaaaaaaand???????

The 2nd "New" laser from Ebay did not read any disks.

Girlfriend bought a new laser deck from Amazon aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand?????? - didn't read any disks.

Put everything back to how it was originally and it was back to "reads some disks but not others".

Spent hours !#^&^$^ about with this combo and that combo.

I'm reasonably experienced with these kinds of diagnosis and repairs but all I can think of is that I just needed an actual new, really new, actually made to be a spare part, forged from raw materials, made from the beginning honest to god Ps4 Pro laser - sorry, just explaining what new means in case anyone selling them on ebay doesn't know.

Had to just give up on it because I'm done being ripped off and sending things back e.t.c.

I suppose my helpful hints are:

  1. If it doesn't accept disks - this is fuse related HOWEVER, the fuses could be getting blown by a short in a component (blu ray drive).
  2. If it doesn't read disks (OP) then it'll likely be the laser but don't expect to be able to prove that without a good supplier.
  3. Don't think any replacement parts are actually new, or even that they were tested anytime recently - it's scam city out there folks.
  4. Bridging the fuses is actually fine - big caveat here is that you really need to know what you're doing as they protect sensitive circuitry from drawing overcurrent in the event that something shorts out or is mechanically working too hard. Also you need to know you're components are not causing fuses to blow.
  5. Bonus tip: - If your PS4 Pros fan is screaming it's head off, replace the thermal pads with new quality ones from 3M aswell as the cleaning out and thermal paste renewal (use good stuff for that too like Arctic MX6 or whatever number is newest). I've done this several times and the biggest improvement was thermal pads believe it or not.

I have now seen twice that the original ps4 pro (cuh-70xx) doesnt read discs if it lays horizontally. But if you insert the disc and then tilt the console a little bit while it's trying to read it will spin up and read the disc just fine.

Does anyone know what might cause this? It's something within the disc drive, because I tested the same console with a known good disc drive and it worked fine.

I would blame the laser but it still works since it will eventually read the disc.

Any ideas?
