My iPhone 3G is dead after I opened the case

Hi

Two months ago, my iPhone 3G dropped into the water for 1 second. I dried it, I opened it (many times, so I've experience in opening and disassembling it) and cleaned it. Some strips on the display flex were damaged so I repaired them and the iPhone was alive again.

I used it normally for a month and a half and the last week I decided to replace the repaired flex with a new one. I bought the part, I opened the iPhone again, I replaced the flex (which is located in the display half), I closed it again and the iPhone never started.

Now it is completely dead. No display, no sounds, it is also not recognized by my PC as an USB device. I measured the battery voltage and it is 3.8V so it should start.

Any ideas of how to troubleshoot it?

Thank you very much

carlos

Yes, I thought that the new flex could be defective, so I just tried to start the iPhone without the flex connected (in that case I would not have display but yes USB) and it didn't started.

I'll try leads 1 and 3 (I already did it, buy I'll do it again). Nevertheless, do you know any guide to troubleshoot the iPhone more deeply? So I can detect any defective chip and replace it?

Thank you very much and regards!

Could the replacement part be defective?

If you still have the damaged flex, i'd test the phone with that to verify that the new flex isn't defective.

i agree with keith. but checking all the leads(1-3) are on properly may also help. also try hard reset.

i've just spent the last 1 1/2 trying to get my iphone to power on... mine was a power button/flex problem and the lcd connector 1which i was sure was on! i replaced both 100's of times before i finally got it. it truly can be frustrating!

is there any reason to suspect a chip is at fault? if your phone worked until you replaced the flex then more than likely that is where the problem lies. you have a working (although old) flex which you can use to recheck if the phone works. sometimes the phone will not work if one of the leads (especially 1) isn't connected. i'd replace the old part for the new and see what happens.

as to the guide... it'd be nice wouldn't it? but so far there is only the trouble shooting guide on ifixit, it's mainly for common problems. truly it is a matter of trial and error when fixing some problems!

if you power the phone on and switch vibrate it may show signs of life in which case it is lcd connection.

any chance you have not put connector 4 or screw over battery connectors on properly?

otherwise it could be the power button/flex.
