power adapter lights, but nothing further

Pluging the power adapter in, the doughnut light around the laptop end glows DEEP orange (rather than the yellow when charging), but unit will not power up when I press the start-button. Also, the battery is good but will not take a charge in this machine. I charged the battery in another laptop, and it takes a full charge. In short: Both power sources are good, but machine does not start up.

Disconnected ribbon cable

broken connector to power button, or blown logic board.

Start with the simple things first. Ensure that the top case ribbon cable is connected, that the connectors are not broke. If they all look good then it's the LB.

I'm not sure what a ribbon-cable is, but the two wires leading from the start button are connected and I even tied a different start button to test for a bad button. If by "ribbon-cable" you mean the multi-wire connector to the screen, I have been able to start plenty of G4s with a few of those wires broken; I think the vertical lines that run across a screen are caused by one or more of those wires broken.
