So the camera is just black in the camera app, but works fine in other apps that utilize the camera.
Force closing the app, hard reset, and restore of the phone has been tried. Any other ideas?
Full reset worked, by doing it via the phone.
I suspect that the fault lies in the back-up the customer had on their computer.

Whilst it may not help this case, but just as an FYI. The iPhone 5 back camera has a history of having a terrible connection. If the back camera goes (and the front still works), just try giving the external camera glass a firm press... This is normally enough to spring it back to life.

Other than resetting every time the camera goes out, this is the only solution that’s worked for me. Thank you!

Delete and reinstalling the app helped me fix my issue. Upon reinstall, I just gave the app all the permissions it requested.

It was issue with Camera app, and not Snapchat :-) But glad you solved you issue

I went to Apple today and they wanted us to buy a new phone $319 or replace the camera $59, no guarantee on the camera replacement. Camera was working in all other camera apps, except for the Apple Camera app! Frustrating. I used iTunes to do a hard reset. No luck. Then I looked in the camera settings and I changed formats -> Most Compatible. For some reason High Efficiency was checked, and when I tried to take pics with this checked, nothing saves to the camera roll. We don't even get a preview. I hope this helps someone else! :)

If you see a closed lens or black screen when you open the Camera app, try these steps:
- Make sure that there’s nothing blocking the camera lens. If you’re using a case, try removing it.
- Force the app to close, then open the Camera app again.
- Restart your device, then open the Camera app again.
- If your device has a front and rear camera, try both cameras by tapping . If you see the closed lens or black screen on only one camera, take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Service Provider for more help.

my front camera work but my back camera all im seeing is black .. it only works on facebook

I had the same issue and tried all of the suggestions mentioned above but those didn’t work. I switched between the camera functions ie video, slo-mo, etc. then back to photo and it worked.

I have 5 cameras 1 camera works fine the other 4 records events but no live data.i replaced 1 camera same issue what's my problem. Thank you in advance

Yes. Snapchat works fine, for both front and back

maybe not enough storage, so couldn't take photos any more.

Hav you tried closing all applications down that may be using he camera? if you dont know how to do this double click the home button and swipe upwards to close the apps, then try the camera?

The phone has 25 GB avaliable so unfortunately not. Tried closing everything else, but no luck
