Do I really need a new logic board? (Water damage)

MacBook Pro 13" late 2014

Hi there,

Long story short- my MacBook Pro met with a pint of beer on the keyboard. Tried to dry it out, but the screen is now always black. It works fine when connected to an external screen, and all other components but the screen seem OK (keyboard, trackpad, backlight on keyboard, sound, webcam, etc). The screen also worked initially for a few seconds/minutes upon start up but not for the last few months.

I took it to a local repair shop to have a diagnostic done, and was quoted a LOT, saying the screen, keyboard, and logic board would need replacing. I just want to know if considering everything seems to be working apart from the display, if a logic board would really need replacing.

If yes then that's fine but I just want to make sure they've inspected it properly and aren't trying to hoodwink me as I clearly know nothing about computers!

Thanks very much,

M

First thing to do is hook it up to an external monitor and see if you get a good picture. Did the beer enter through the keyboard? Do all the keys work?

Hi there, thanks for replying. Yeah, the beer was spilled on the keyboard, but everything but the screen works. Keyboard, trackpad, sound- even the webcam still takes photos. Attaching it to an external screen shows it works perfectly and appears to be isolated to the mac screen. Thanks!

Open it up and check it for corrosion, especially around the LDVS (video card connector.) Next I would try just replacing the the display. This machine is very well protected from keyboard spills. I am surprised that all the keys work. You must have not turned it on while still wet. I think you have a good chance of getting out of this relatively cheap. Also if all this work does have to be done, it may be covered under your home owners or renters insurance.

Thanks very much for the reply and advice, I really appreciate it. There diagnostic service I sent it too said I'd need to replace the logic board, keyboard and display (repairs then costing more than a new MacBook) so I'll definitely give this a shot. Thanks!
