Fixing the setting dial on washing machine

There are 2 parts to the dial: one part (1.) that seems to be the dial that actually controls the setting, and the other part, underneath, (2.) that has the arrow on it that points to the setting. The second part can be accidentally turned independently from the first part, which is what caused the problem. The part with the arrow turned so it does not point to the right place in the cycle. The manual doesn't cover this that I can see. I need to know how to fix the dial so it points to the right place, and if possible, so it can't get knocked off again. (Possibly by removing the second part of the dial?)

Thank you for the tip!

Please check that number as it brings up a microwave oven.

That's weird. It's the number that's on my washer. And I had an online chat with GE about it, in which they sent me the manual (good, but no help for this issue) and then told me to have a repair person look at it. It just seems like the kind of thing I should be able to do myself, as nothing seems to be broken.

I'm not familiar with this models button. If it is not two part and meant to adjust separately, it may be an assemble part and put together with glue. In that case, you should be able to pull on it to remove it. You may see glue residue on the inside. if so use a couple of dabs of superglue to put it back together after aligning it correctly and stick it back on.

The problem is knowing the correct way to align it, since the upper part of the dial doesn't have any indication of where it's supposed to be pointing. I'm guessing that the post the dial is attached to is one of those D-shaped things. If so, is there a standard orientation of the post with the start of the cycle or the "off" position that would be the same on all washers?

Pull it of and look. There may be glue marks, it may be a broken piece of plastic.

Omg. I have the same problem… the same exact problem! And can't find a straight answer on the entire internet anywhere. Everybody wants your money and tells you to call somebody for something that should be simple.

It's a d-a-m-n , there's got to be a way to align it and it shouldn't take somebody with a engineer degree to come do it.

This is ridiculous.
