My MacBook Pro will not turn on - have tried resetting SMC.

Hi all,

I have a 2.4GHz MBP late 2008 model that will not turn on, no fan noise, so I am pretty sure that it is not a display issue.

I have it connected to my power cord which is showing that the battery is charged (green light). The only suggestion I can find online is resetting the SMC, which did not work.

Is there anyway that I can determine what piece of the hardware is causing the issue so that I can replace it myself? From a bit of research it sounds like it could be anything from the logic board to the charger connector but I have no way of working out which.

Thanks!!

Thanks for the vote of confidence @gigabit87898

Hi Matt,

Let's try a couple of quick fixes first. With the battery removed and mag-safe disconnected, press and hold the power on button for 15 seconds. Reattach the mag-safe and see if it does anything.

Next, try zapping the PRAM. Hold down the P R Command and option keys and hit the power, continue holding these keys down and wait for it to tone three times.

Let me know your results.

Hi Mayer,

Thanks for getting in touch, I tried both of your suggestions without any luck.

In the end I found the Apple Technicians PDF and ran through that to conclude that it was my logic board that had broken. As a temporary solution I used the 'bake' method and it is now up and running.

Thanks for your help

Matt

Matt, this may work for a while, but your bet bet with be to do a reflow of the GPU with a hot air rework gun.

Thanks for the response, I just ran a quick test:

When plugged in to the mains outlet but with the battery removed charge indicator LEDs on the side still light up when I press the button. I assume this means that the DC-In is still working?

из

Yes, that means the dc-in is working.... Has it ever gotten wet?

из

Okay thats great, making some progress!!

No it has managed to avoid any major spills.

What about the battery, is it a aftermarket one or has it ever had any problems? Also what is the last thing you did on your MacBook before it stopped working?

из

The battery is the original one supplied with the mac, which as you can imagine was on its last legs - practically holding no charge.

I never bought a new one as I was always using the laptop on my desk.

I have used it before without the battery in so assumed that it wouldn't be the cause of the problem now...?

I believe I was running Premiere Pro at the time - either that or safari + spotify.
