Is there any way to permanently disable my touchpad?

Whenever my touchpad is enabled, the mouse pointer moves around and clicks when I type because my arms are near to or graze the touchpad. I've seen My mouse clicks when I rest my wrist next to the trackpad.. and I know this is apparently due to battery swell, but I don't care about the reason, I just want to permanently disable my touchpad.

I do know about the option to automatically disable the touchpad whenever an external mouse is plugged in, but the problem is that it's constantly 'forgetting' that the mouse is plugged in and I have to unplug it and re-plug it in multiple times a day just to remind the system to disable the touchpad. This is highly annoying. I want to just flat-out disable it. I've tried uninstalling the driver for it, but it just automatically reinstalls itself.

Thanks for any help.

Press Fn+F5 at the same time

or

Restart your machine and quickly press F2 -> POST Behavior -> Mouse/Touchpad -> Select Serial Mouse or PS2 Mouse

Fn+F5 just dims the display on my system, but I did try the F2 option. My BIOS doesn't seem to have the options you mention, but it did have an option to enable or disable the 'Internal pointing device' (with a help column that called it more specifically the touch pad), but then when I disabled it and booted up neither my keyboard *nor* my touchpad worked. I had to reboot again and re-enable that option. So apparently there's some bug in the BIOS that prevents me from using this as a solution.

What machine do you have?

oh, I guess i should say it's the Asus G74Sx-XT1 . For some reason I got the impression this was an Asus forum but I don't see anything to indicate that on this page.

go to the control panel in your computer, change view by to category in the top right corner if it isn't already that setting. Then go into hardware and sound, click on mouse and you should be able to see a disable click/touch pad. Click it, and now, it should be disabled.

Nah, there's a tab, "Finger Sensing Pad" in which there's only a single button, "Configure" which opens an third-party window for configuring the touch pad, and there's no disable option. the closest thing to a disable option is the one to disable it while there's a mouse plugged in.

there is another way of disabling it, search for device manager in the windows start menu. Under mice and other pointing devices, there should be the touch pad. Right click it and go into properties, go into the driver tab and click the uninstall driver button. This will disable the touch pad however, i am not sure if you will be able to get it back.

If there would be a way to get it back it would be going back into the device manager, and scanning for hardware changes. Even then not sure and I would prefer not to test that out my self.

did that solve it?

I've already tried that solution before. Windows seemed to almost immediately reinstall the driver automatically.

do it again but first go into services and look for windows update. once you find it right click it and go into property's. Change the start up type to disabled, that will stop windows from automatically installing updates and drivers, or at least it should. Let me know if this works, thanks
