MagSafe cable Extension / Replacement
Hi
Can the MagSafe cable be extended in any way? The 1 meter standard length is far to short for my needs, and is restrictive to the location I would like to place my Mac Pro.

Isn't it possible to plug the screen and the computer into a Thunderbolt hub?
And use say a 2M Thunderbolt cable from the computer to the hub... Or find a hub that has a long cable if available..

Don't know of any Thunderbolt Hub units out their, there are Thunderbolt Docks intended for MacBook Laptop's. But, that would be more expensive over the cable option I would think.
Hi
Have thought of that, but not sure what sort of hub to get, not an IT wizard I'm afraid.
I'll research that in the evening. My local time (in 8 hours). See if something comes up. It should be more expensive but less risky since you can either just plug cables into the hub or at worst modify the hub itself instead of the Thunderbolt Display. Less risk of breaking the more expensive stuff.
I think it is still early to call it a viable solution, I was throwing ideas for testing.
Sorry to say Apple doesn't offer one and I have yet to find any 3rd party offerings.
Your options are:
Also remember adding length here on the DC side will drop the voltage so I'm not sure if that could effect the SMC charging logic.
If on the other hand you are talking about the Thunderbolt display connection:
So far I haven't seen one offered. That is if you want to use the ports on the Thunderbolt display.
If you only want to use the DisplayPort part of the connection there are a few DisplayPort extension cables like this one: C2G Mini DisplayPort Extension Cable, Male to Female (6', White) this is what we use but we're connecting to a DisplayPort display not a Thunderbolt display unit. So I'm not sure if this will work here.
The other option, is to open the display and carefully remove the current Thunderbolt cable from the socket on the logic board and then feed through a longer cable! Replacing the current combo cable.
Review this IFIXIT guide: Apple Thunderbolt Display Teardown jump down to Step 10 where you can see the connection is just a simple plug & socket connection.

I think you have given me the answer, replace the full cable. is there any specific cable I should order? Or will any thunderbolt cable work?
I have seen the teardown of the TB Unit, and looks possible if care is taken.
Keith
In replacing the TB cable: I wouldn't go crazy here, the longest needed is what I would go with. Too long a cable could effect the signals. I would use care with the removed of the combo cable as you might want to put it back in the future so don't damage it.
Let us know how it goes and what length you used. Good Luck!
Dan
looking to use a 2m cable, but unsure as to what i should buy. any suggestions? the change looks easy enough, the hard part is removing the screen glass with damage.
Keith
To be safe just order the real Apple cable: Apple Thunderbolt Cable (2.0 m) - White
Use suction cups the glass is held on by magnets!

You are speaking about the MagSafe power cord side not the Thunderbolt display/data cable correct?
