Unable to maintain seal to remove cracked screen

I'm trying to follow the repair guide for an iPod 5th generation cracked screen. I have packing tape over the face of the iPod. When I try to remove the cracked screen with the suction cup, the cup has a medium strength seal against the tape, but the tape has a very poor connection to the cracked screen. The packing tape in question is Scotch brand Heavy Duty Shipping tape. If I use a heat gun to try and soften the adhesive holding the screen in place, I seem to get a weaker seal both between cup and tape and between tape and screen. Also, are there any guidelines as to what "heat gun on low" means? I have a heat gun that runs from 250 to 1250 in 100 degree increments.

Any advice or tips on how to better maintain the seal, or otherwise remove the cracked screen?

Use the heat gun near the bottom of the screen (either side of the home button) then use an isesamo to pry underneath the screen either side of the home button to separate the adhesive, don't do under the home button itself, it's easy to damage and hard to replace the flex cable for the home button. As for what temp i use a "Just too hot to touch" gauge I think this is in the 70-100C range.
