Screen goes/stays black after hitting the A button on startup screen

When I start the console, I get the "Health and Safety" screen, then a message comes up telling me to hit the "A" button. Once I hit the button, I hear the "button press" noise and the screen fades to black. After this, no matter how long I wait, I get no sound and a solid black screen. I've tried unplugging the console from its power source and plugging it back in, multiple restarts, and even different controllers, but to no avail. The Nintendo customer support agent with whom I spoke said that it sounded like a hardware issue, but I have no idea where it would originate from (given that I'm getting video AND audio at startup). Any advice?

The resource files of the system menu (stored in NAND flash) are corrupted; there is no way for you to fix this yourself. You will have to send it to Nintendo for repairs, or replace the main board.

Wow...it looks likt the board itself costs more than the $85 it would cost to send it in to Nintendo. As sad as it is, I appreciate the information.

They probably meant hardware issue in that its a faulty hard drive or corrupted firmware. This can happen if you try to mod your console to run homebrew or just randomly if updates don't install correctly. Sorry to tell you, but there is really no way to fix it outside of going to Nintendo for replacement.

That's what I was afraid of. The strange thing is that I've never modded my console in any way (software or hardware), and no updates had been run since a long while before the last time it worked. I was hoping to avoid sending it in simply due to financial reasons (I don't want to pay them $85 to replace a part that may only cost half of that), but sadly I don't even know what part(s) would need to be replaced in this kind of situation!
