Strange wifi problems, driver related (I think)

Hello, I have been have some strange wifi problems with my asus zenbook pro model UX501J (UX501VW almost identical) it has an intel duel band wireless-AC 7260 wireless card in it, for some reason as of a few days ago after trying to cast to a miracast device my wi-fi card has been acting strange at first I though it was the drivers gone bad for some reason so I reinstalled the drivers from scratch and it sorta worked but when I tried it again I notice something strange right after I uninstalled the drivers by uninstalling the device in device manager if I refresh devices all the drivers have re installed them selfs...... so I uninstalled them in safe mode and they didn't reinstall in safe mode... so I found the drivers and deleted them my self and restarted they came back almost instantly but the wifi was working fine.... so I though I had fixed it but after I turned it on the next day the wifi was all wack again.... the problem I keep haveing is after I restart the computer after it self reinstalls the wifi drivers the wifi brakes in a strange way and that is that out of the 5-8 wifi nets I normally see it now can only see 1-3 of them (there are 2 routers in my house on different channels 1 has 2.4 and 5.0 separated) and they all have very low strength from in the same room, the strange thing is is when I connect to one it suddenly gets full signal strength and the others just die out completely and if when im in my room (opposing the side of the house with the routers) if cant find any wifi networks but if i then go back into safe mode and uninstall the drivers again and reboot it can see and reconnect just fine until the computer restarts... also all other wifi devices work fine in my room with 40 Mbs down 5 Mbs up so... any ideas?

Hi, I'm assuming that Device Manager reports no problems with the WLAN network adapter?

Wondering if a loose WiFi antenna connection is the problem. You say you see less networks now and your own networks have less strength, this perhaps suggests that the signal reception capability is down. The networks that you can't 'see' anymore, can you remember their signal strength value? e.g. if it was medium strength or less then maybe due to a loose antenna it cannot detect that level of signal whereas your local network being presumably 'full' strength is still being picked up but appears at a lesser strength. It also might explain why the level 'comes and goes'

If you have another PC/laptop with WiFi capabilities install a WiFi scanner program like inSSIDer in both machines. (There is still a free version out there). This will give the signal level values in dB of the detected networks so that you can compare.

I though of that but I don't think that is it as right after I uninstall in safe mode and reinstall normal boot it works fine all networks show up it's just after the computer restarts again that it breaks...

I myself solved it by downgrading the nVidia driver to the one proposed by ASUS, from 374.X.X to the version 353.54. It solved the flickering problem, and the wi-fi problems too at the same time, the Graphic Card was encountring issues with the WLAN card with this version aparently. The versions of the drivers of the manufacturer are customized to suit your laptop best. Better install them and not update. The only problem Istill have, is a recurrent flash script in the command prompt. I don't know where it comes from but it disappears so fast I can't read what's written on it, and it's definitely not a virus since I checked my computer with the latest version of ESET Smart security and Malewarebytes.

I hope my answer helps the others.

Exactly have the same problem. Did you ever fix this?

Hi,

Whose WiFi drivers are you using, Windows, Asus or Intel?

Presumably you'd think that the Asus drivers would be the best, it is after all their product that the WiFi has to work with.

Here is a link to the most up to date Asus drivers for Win 10

I have tied the ones from asus and from intel (or at least tried to.... when I try to update is says they are up to date even when pointing it the drivers)

Right now I am thinking it is these "intel proset wireless software" as for some reason there are 4 of them with very slight name deference like a space instead of a / in the name, what do you think? Should I try uninstalling these and the drivers and then see?

Hi, I'm wondering if it is still a hardware problem. You said it only goes off after you have started the machine after it has been off a while. is this right or does it happen after a restart as well? Also does it happen if you only use 5GHz channels (if possible - trying to prove whether it is related to 2,4GHz channels only)?

EDIT - just re read your last comment is this software listed in the WLAN adapter properties?

Yes I would uninstall everything related to the WLAN adapter and see if Windows finds it on startup. Have you tried enabling show hidden devices in Device Manager in case there is 'old' entries for the WLAN adapter still listed which may be confusing it?

OK here is the order of operations not time significant time passes,

Wifi broken, boot safe mode, uninstall wifi drivers and delete, restart computer, wifi works perfectly fine, computer shutdown and restart, wifi re broke...

It does not matter if that restart is immediately after shut down or a few days apart...

It does not seem to matter if it's 2.4 or 5.0

The software just shows up in the uninstall area like any other program, and does not appear to be mentioned in the adapter properties.

And I will try removing everything including those 4 programs...

Hi,

Just wondering if one of the drivers is corrupted. You say that you restart the computer after uninstalling the driver and then it works OK on next startup. To me this implies that Windows finds the driver for the WLAN and reinstalls it. Therefore it must have the drivers already, so that it can install them. Perhaps you should find these files in the Windows Driver Store in your PC, and temporarily move them to another location. Then when Windows restarts it should show a problem with the WLAN in Device Manager because there are no drivers or it puts the WLAN adapter into the 'Other Devices' category. Hopefully then you can 'update' the drivers' using your downloaded driver files and then they should be installed in the Driver store. Here is a link that may assist.

I don't know if this helps but Glary says that the driver for the wan card is not contained in Windows....

Also there seems to be 4 peaces of software related to the wifi card could they be causing the problem?

Purchased a 11AC USB 2 band wifi adapter, 600 mbps with a hi gain antenna for less than $10 USD on eBay. Installed the adapter and required software which provided the option to use the original internal wifi or that provided by the wifi adapter. Wifi adapter performance is greatly improved over the internal antenna/circuitry. Now when encountering even slightly weaker signals, connection with the adapter is good whereas connection is often not possible with the original circuitry/antenna.

P.S. you don’t need to use any software for a USB (or any) wireless card, you just have to connect via the network and sharing control panel instead of the taskbar, unless you change witch one is the main card, and another advantage of doing this it you can connect to or generate another wifi network ad you have two wifi card in essence, with that said, I never trust any product that requires a special software in order to function, most are just junk and will bog down the system, (posted this a LONG time ago, I now build computers as a side job)

P.P.S I believe the software (driver) installed was available in Windows 10, already on the computer. The adapter driver was installed as a separate wifi network, selectable from the wifi selection panel. The internet speed was very fast, and faster than by using a wifi signal repeater. The speed was essentially as fast as that provided via a wired ethernet connection to my desktop computer.
