Why has my printer locked up?

The HP Deskjet 710c machine will not function, the carriage is hidden within the RH. housing and will not emerge on opening the upper cover (as for cartridge changing). I have tried the printer with another PC and aso with a different signal cable, to no effect. The power feed to the printer seems to be ok, since both press switch lights illuminate. However, the carriage can not be moved, being locked solid by the timing belt drive. I would be very grateful for advice on what may be the cause of this sudden failure and how to access the interior of the machine without damaging the moulded ABS plastic casing. (I have already taken out the 2 torx headed machine screws at the top of each side case.

Thanks in anticipation of help.

Regards

RICHARD

HI:

As you know this printer is way past prime. A work horse for sure. If you have the lights on, have you tried to open the back paper jam door and had a look if something is actually up in there.

On power up if memory serves me well, the printer will do some clean up and move the cartridges over and rotate the gears then go to home and do a bit more noise. Does your printer do this? Also if you lift the lid yes the print head moves out for changing. Is there any noise even a hum to let you know it is trying.

Ok now we have exhausted the tests, you can try grabbing the transfer belt and see if this moves the print head. If you can and still no noise I have to say you must prepare for the funeral.

I also will tell you any of the new printers for $30 are superior to this old faithful.

Something you know is this is a parallel printer so is your computer also an older model with windows XP. Find a printer that looks good to you, smells good to you and it feels like it will live in your house, copy down the model number and google if there is a driver for your operating system and the new baby. I would also ask one if the store helpers to do this research and guarantee it will work so you can adopt it after a couple of days living with you.

Good luck and please dispose of your old friend at a recycle depot.
