After battery replacement, phone wont charge, periodically shuts down

Hi -

So I replaced my aging iPhone6 battery with an iFixit battery replacement kit. Followed each instruction meticulously. Took me about 90 minutes. With the new battery installed, the phone had approximately 50% battery life. From here I continued to follow instructions to use the phone until it was below 10% before a full charge to calibrate battery - no issues. The next day I thought I would test to see how well this new battery performed. I unplugged my phone in the morning at 100% and used it all day (to my surprise) playing games, surfing the web, watching videos and the battery held up! No issues whatsoever. Later on, when I plugged it into the charger was when I started to see some problems. after about a minute of continuous use, the screen would flash and then the phone would shut down as if the battery just became disconnected. The phone now will only hold steady at 20% charge and is not usable. Did I receive a faulty product from iFixit?

I have tried reopening the phone, inspecting the connections, disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, however, this didn't resolve the issue. Is anyone else having this problem?

Thanks,

can you compare connecting pin of old battery and new one, i think connecting pin had issue

Thanks for the reply, I thought that may be the issue as well - when I reset the battery connector I did inspect for damage, debris and corrosion and compared it to the original. I didn't see anything that would determine the failure.

Hi Annette -

Thanks for the reply, I initially reached out to your customer service team on the 3 days ago and have received limited response thus far. Hoping to hear back from you soon.

Thanks again

The way your phone's charging system works is basically:

Lightning port > charge IC > battery > charge IC > lightning port. When all 3 of those are functioning, your phone pulls a full charge and fully depletes that charge. Your phone did that once, then stopped. So why would it do that? There are only 3 things that it really could be and I prefer to address them in order of simplicity. The easiest thing to try would be another battery. Throw your old battery back in and see if it pulls more than 20%. If it does, then you know the iFixit battery is bad. It happens. All those batteries are made in China in batches of like 42 quadrillion and sometimes you get a bad one. Sucks, but it happens.

If your old battery doesn't charge more than 20%, the next easiest thing is the Lightning port. Its a relatively cheap part and isn't super complicated to replace. I've even heard of people connecting the new lightning port to the board, then connecting the battery to see if it charges, without uninstalling the old one. That way you only invest about 20 seconds in figuring out if that was it. If the new port charges up your battery fully, you should be good.

The last part is all too common in iPhones and you are the only one who can know for sure if this happened. If you use a non-Apple certified Lightning cable, you can damage the power IC. This causes issues like you are having and other symptoms like only certain cables working. So if you tried the other things I listed, you have to ask yourself if you have only used Apple certified cables and chargers. You know the answer to that. If the power IC is bad, its not a death sentence. It can be replaced.

Good luck.

Thanks for taking the time to read my entire post and craft a well thought out response! This was the most helpful yet.

I would love to keep tinkering and get to the root cause of the issue. Unfortunately, I won't be able to do any testing or additional repairs. I use my phone for work and gave my backup to my parents. I needed to get it fixed or a replacement asap, so I traded it in - wonky battery and all.

You learned a valuable lesson in repair: When to stop. We all have a point where its just not worth our time. If its any help: I think you made the right call. It was more than likely a power IC, which means its expensive to fix.

Glad you are up and running.

try hardreset

use another cable and/or charger best original

Take a close look inside the bottom of your iPhone using a flashlight. If you see any debris or gunk in there, it might be preventing the lightning or dock connector cable from making a solid connection to your iPhone. There are lots of little pins down there, and it only takes one obscured pin to prevent your iPhone from charging.

Thanks for the reply, but it isn't a simple issue that would be fixed with a hard reset - I've tried that in desperation several time :) The lightning connector is clean, the charge cable is original. The phone shuts down only during heavy use (videos, games, etc) and does so in a peculiar manner. While the battery won't display that it's increasing in percentage (stays at 20% now) the phone will stay on for a long time without heavy usage.
